Just ordered my breast pump through my insurance but they won’t send it until baby is born...which I would be upset about but I’ve got a pump from my last pregnancy so I guess I’ll use that for the first week or two if I need to.

Your not suppose to pump for first 6 weeks that’s probably why they don’t send until baby is born.

@girlymamaa, your body produces milk on a supply and demand type system. Baby sucking on your breasts stimulates your body produce enough milk that they need. If you over stimulate by pumping you will have too much milk for your baby which can cause problems for you like engorged painful breasts, mastitis as well as problems for baby like you having a heavy letdown which will make the milk come out too fast for your newborn who drinks slow and it will cause them to choke and not want to drink from your breast. After the first 6 weeks your supply has regulated, your baby has gotten used to breastfeeding so it’s less likely to complicate the system.

oh wow. I need to talk to my lactation consultant. I’ll be returning to work when baby is between 3 to 4 months and I thought that pumping right away would be fine. 🤦🏾‍♀️Glad I saw this.

But what about moms who exclusively pump? Or for whatever reason baby can’t latch? Babies in the NICU that can’t breastfeed? There’s too many variables to just say oh well you don’t need it right away

When your baby is in the nicu they supply you with a pump to use while the baby is there usually.

You’re right. They offered to let me use one there and I could rent one for a fee if I wanted to take it home but I was grateful to have my own insurance provided pump so that when I made those quick trips home to refuel and shower I could pump in my baby’s room instead of the hospital pumping room and return with some ready to go. It’s not a huge deal I’m sure I just was thankful to have mine for that rocky start that we had so I guess I don’t understand the need to delay on sending it.
