So my daughter has autism as some of you may know and I tried to give her a bath tonight but she was kicking and screaming and we were scared she was gonna hurt herself form fighting so hard but she really needs a bath. She was playing in the grass today and has dirt everywhere. Any advice on how to get her to go in the tub?

Is it the water she’s sensitive to or bubbles or just the act of washing/touching her skin or hair?

She’s really good with all of it. I don’t know why she’s acting like she doesn’t want it all of a sudden

interesting that she’s had a bit of a regression in that area then. I was going to suggest maybe just a soapy wash clothe followed by a water wash clothe in a dry tub for a quick solution.

My son has sensory issues pertaining to his face, head and hands. We really struggle with hair washing. But also for a time he was terrified of bubbles, and it would become an issue when we’d rinse the soap off and the water would become bubbly. He’s been in speech for a year and when he finally was able to tell us it was the bubbles, we showed him how to make them go away and also made a song up about it. After 2 weeks, he was asking for bubbles so he could sing his song and make them go away.

How’s her speech? Is she able yet to communicate with you in a way that would help you understand what this sudden fear is?

Maybe a sensory overload? Sometimes when a child with Autism has been exposed to a multitude of sensory experiences the littlest thing (even if it typically doesn’t bother them) might set them off.

Sorry I’m a Special Education Paraprofessional and I see sensory overload all of the time.

No I don’t mind at all lol. She was just diagnosed in February and it’s taking forever to get therapy started. Thank you

We did and she still flipped out but we just literally gave her a 2 minute wash with head to toe wash and rinsed her off.

Hot Mess Mama 🥴

My son does this randomly as well. I just fill a bowl of warm water and soap, lay a towel down on the floor and just wash him with a wash cloth until the morning

My daughter has autism as well. Usually the bath isn’t a big deal, but sometimes it is. I’ve let her do her thing in the other room, and filled the tub up, with bubbles and then brought her in “bath time” and I’ve literally given her like a 45 second bath while she was standing up in it. You could also get in with her and have your husband help quickly clean her up—- you would act as the cushion so she doesn’t bang herself against the tub. Just the bare minimum.
