Okay so debate.... Lol

Me and one of my male friends were conversing about this today.

When a baby is born out of wedlock, especially a boy, do you automatically give the child the Father's last name? Why / why not?

For those who gave your maiden name....what happens when/if you get married? Your kid will have your maiden name

Legally you CAN change a child's name.

I think it depends on the situation my SO and I aren't married but we have been together since junior high. Our kids both have his last name. Our son has the same exact name as him. We have loved together for almost 8 years now. But my sister's baby has her last name. Her dad wouldn't even sign the birth certificate. He's a POS tbh and I'm glad she didn't give her his last name. He's actually going to be signing his rights over. I think of the father is active in the child's life and is a good parent it should be the dad's last name. But if not it should be the mother's.

That makes sense. At birth though you can't predict those things, you know.

@rese that's true I never really thought about it that way. You dont always Know someone's going to up and leave. My sister knew though. They had already broken up way before she found out she was pregnant. And she didn't end up telling him untill like 3 days before she went into labor. I guess it depends on the situation.

I gave my son my bfs last name. I feel he’s the dad so why not let him have his last name 🤷🏻‍♀️ plus I plan on marrying him one day

It honestly depends on the relationship you have with the father of the child as well as how much he is willing to be a part of your child’s life.

Depends on the relationship. My friend gave her son her last name because her and the father were still early in their dating relationship. They had made no future plans together before getting pregnant.

On the other hand. I have my birth father's last name and both my brother and I were conceived during a very rocky patch in their 7 year marriage. They divorced soon after I was born and I haven't seen him since.

So I say it depends on the relationship.

Oh wow. Do you think that it was because of the marriage? Like technically, it was your father's and mother's name at the time, no?

@rese in my case. No. Where they were laws were different. Women kept their last names regardless of marriage. Kids were give one or the other or a hyphenate version. They keep those last names for life, unless they move, marry, and can file under different laws.

My mother always taught me if we were not married then you hyphenate your name, my kids have two last names

I know some do that. I've heard pros and cons to hyphenation.

My daughter has my last name. We did it because no one believed she was his until the DNA test came back that we paid for.

I mean it's really your preference and situation. Like if the father is not going to be around or involved then I wouldn't but if he is then I think it's fine to give him the last name. Just because he is there and he had part in making the child and for a man that's big especially when it's a son when he's grown he will carry on the name.

I kept my first son with my maiden name because I knew the guy wouldn’t have any part of my child’s life.

With my second I gave him my partner’s last name even though we weren’t married at that time.

I would. My step son has our last name not his moms and he was born out of wedlock.

I just feel it’s automatic to give the fathers name since it doesn’t change

I find it pretty hilarious how people who have shown their true colors on social media snake away, delete the posts that outed them and come back on social media like nothing happened. Why do that, you outed yourself, so stay out. We still see you boo boo...
