Question.. is it possible for one to be in “active labor” but not be dilated AT ALL? The only thing she’s having is contractions, not regular, irregular pattern contractions. They come in groups she says.

If she’s not due until May 9th she’s got like 2 1/2 weeks left. Sounds like Braxton Hicks. I used to get them in groups and they got some what intense. They are irregular too. Tell her to drink water and lay down on her left side. Most doctors or nurses would tell someone with a few weeks left to do that first to see if they’ll go away.

Also dilation is no indication of labor. There’s no way the doctors could say she’d be having her baby within a week. No one really knows when labor will happen.

I was in active labor but not dilating past 3 for hours because I had a high cervix

My cousin didn't dilate enough so she had to have a C-section to have her daughter.

Not 100% on technicalities of active labor but it sounds like Braxton Hicks to me which is totally normal around this time

I had contractions that I did not feel at all, my water had broken but also didn’t know bc my son blocked it, 3 days later at my obgyn appointment my doctor made me go to l&d and I did not dilate at all even with almost 15 milligrams of pitocin for 2 more days, till I jumped to fully dilated in abt 2hrs and baby was here.

I was in active labor with my daughter but wasn’t dilating pass a 3. Even with Pitocin. It was because I had scar tissue on my cervix. After the scar tissue snapped I went from a 3-10 within an hour.

@mommy2nikolai, poor girl. Tell her bounce on a big ball. That helped my hips. Lol

@lakota-winyan, i had an unmediated labor/delivery. I was in labor for 12 hours, pushed for 20 minutes. I started dilating though at 34 weeks, at 3cm and then 38 week check up I was at a 4 they told me my cervix was thin and any day he’d be here, then the very next day I had him. Went in at 2:45am and had him at 1:43pm. They broke my water at 8-9cm at 12:30ish because it wasn’t looking like it as going to on its own

@mommy2nikolai, wow. I wouldn’t be able to do a natural birth. I mean I probably could but definitely don’t want it to lol

She'd be in early labor if her contractions are irregular and she's not yet dilated, possibly even in false labor and it could just stop entirely.

@mommy2nikolai if she was in active labor they would have kept her in the hospital instead of sending her home.

@rariszoo, that’s what I thought.. I went in at 38 weeks and I was already dilated to 4cm at 2:45am and then they checked me at 6:30 and it went to a 6cm and then kept me. She went in because her contractions were 2 minutes apart she said and they apparently checked her, told her he’d be here this week, she wasn’t dilated but was in active labor and sent her home to labor and dilate at home told her to come back if they got worse/regular the contractions.

@mommy2nikolai I was induced with my first, but my doctor had always told me before 4cm they wouldn't keep you unless they had medical reasons to like if you needed strep B antibiotics or something like that.

No, doctors don't consider you to be in active labor until you're at least four centimeters dilated and having regular contractions.
