They are safe but the newborn nappers aren't safe for overnight/unsupervised sleep. So if it has a bassinet attachment that's totally fine for naps but just not overnights.
My son slept in his for 7 months before we put up his crib. He used the newborn bassinet for maybe a month then I took that out and he slept with the mat raised until he could crawl then we lowered it once he could crawl.
