I just tell by feeling. Usually ripe ones are firm but yields to gentle pressure. I did a lot of research on picking ripe avocados a few years ago because I kept buying underripe ones lol.
I buy my avocados underripe (green and hard) and leave them on the counter until they're slightly squishy with a gentle squeeze. Then pit it, mash it up, and eat it as a dip with tortilla chips or cheese and crackers. It's sort of an "earthy" taste. I love them, and thankfully my kiddo loves them too. They're so good for you.

It is mushy, it doesn’t really have a taste too much but maybe make some guacamole? I put diced tomato, cilantro, garlic powder, salt and lime juice
