One time I had this dad bring his son in for a haircut. I asked him if we are doing his regular haircut. The dad told me “no, not this time. I just want you to cut his ears off.” The little boy looked at his dad in a panic. He was like “No dad!” The dad said “well why not? You don’t use them. When my daughter favorite show (spirit) is on. She will tune out everything!!! Lol

When my kids don’t listen to me I just shut off whatever they are doing! That way their ears are on me & no where else!!!

A real test is to say a few key words like: ice cream, cake, candy. My daughter often isn’t intentionally not listening because she doesn’t even turn for those, she just gets really focused. If they do turn for those words, they are definitely choosing to ignore you. If not, tapping their shoulder and getting down to their level so they can see your face helps. Turning off the tv isn’t always the best either because it can start a tantrum- I mean, if your husband turned the tv off in the middle of your show, wouldn’t you be upset?

Haha I have been close to tossing a pillow at my little one; I totally get the in the moment thinking. 😂
