I’ve gotten asked this soo many times, it gets pretty annoying especially when I’ve been told “you’re not black enough” or “you’re not white enough”, and for that I hated the way I looked. There was a point in my teen life that I wished I had the blue eyes, straight hair & white skin because majority of my family is white. I hated myself. I don’t want my children thinking any of this! But I know my children WILL go through this & I’m going to try my very best to teach them to love the skin they are in, to be comfortable, to stand up for themselves because they are BEAUTIFUL & no one will take that away from them!

I've been told I'm albino or too white.. I think most people go through this no matter what skin color they have we can only try to teach our kids to be more loving of others and their selves.

I get this all the time! When people ask “what are you” and I say I’m black they’ll say “oh and what else?” Or some will automatically speak to me in Spanish. I know I look mixed (or exotic) but nobody should have to argue with strangers about their ethnicity ! It’s annoying and in my opinion disrespectful.

It’s super disrespectful to assume anything (I haven’t personally been through this) but my nephews are mixed and every time I have them out in public people assume their race and think they are Hispanic when they are African American/Caucasian/and a little bit of Asian from their moms side, I wonder why it matters to people cause they beautiful AF regardless of their race

definitely agree!!

I'm Puerto Rican, however I have very pale skin. I also have extremely curly hair. My entire life people would guess what i was and not once would they think Hispanic. Anytime I'd say no I'm Puerto Rican I'd be told no, are you mixed with white? Speak spanish and prove it. Stop lying.
When it came to my curls I was told I should straighten them all the time because curly hair isn't pretty or not as pretty as straight hair. I got asked if I had a perm because no way they could be natural. I got told I should stop trying to act like I wasn't white and take the wig off.
My baby is Puerto Rican and Black. Her hair is a mix of mine and her daddy. Her skin is golden toned. She looks mixed. I am doing my damndest to make sure she knows she is beautiful, treasured and unique because she is her. I want her to genuinely like herself and know she is valued. I cannot stop what the world will throw at her but I can give her the tools she'll need to come out the other end still whole and proud of who she is.
There are 2 books I'd recommend for any parent I read my little all the time. One is "I Am Enough" and the other is "I Like Myself." Both are amazing reads and my baby has started telling me mommy I like myself!

Yesssssss I pray my boys never have to hear the ignorant things I've heard. "Your hair isn't nappy so you must be mixed with something". "But you aren't dark and you have freckles so you can't be all black" People use to say I bleached my skin to look white smh

I think every race may experience some form of racism. I’ve experienced it and Within my own black community, as well as outside of it. I get judged by many black people who think I’m stuck up, or they feel that I think I’m better than because I’m a light skin black person. I was told that I would’ve been one of the house slaves that were kept in the house for “master” to rape back then instead of in the fields because of my skin color. I get asked what am I mixed with sometimes and some black girls excluded me out in high school as well. People can be cruel. And it stems from being taught that way and how society views people or just insecurities. I just feel really bad for people who talk about others because they obviously feel low about themselves. But I don’t feel like I’m better than anyone, especially when based off my skin. I’m sorry you have had that experience. My heart goes out to you and your babies.

My sons half black but his complexion is very pale.. I’ve already gotten negative comments about “why is he so white?” “Are you sure that’s his dad” and his dad even gotten one once that was like “he’s too white to be your son” etc and it makes me so mad 😣
