Zays first day of testing went great for him, not so sure about his psychologist though. I really threw that woman for a loop when I told her that we have an advocate coming to the IEP meeting which requires wheelchair accommodation. Then she found out who the advocate was and my relationship to said advocate, she got visibly disturbed.
She wasn’t prepared for someone so well known in the disability world here in N. CA to be my sons advocate. That woman is like another mother and another grandparent. She’s one of the best at what she does in the Disability field and she just happens to be part of my village. Sorry lady, I come strapped like I got an AK or sawed off shotgun when it comes to my son, this is just something you’re going to have to deal with.
I was very nice when I chose my sons advocate, I went a whole step down from my friend whose a disabilities rights attorney and offered to be part of this as well. I really am just a super sweet parent who wants the best for her son, it’s just that my connections are a little scarier than most.
Poor thing! Should I buy her some wine after the IEP meeting to settle her nerves lol?

Just wondering why you think you need a disability advocate? Do you not agree with what the school is saying?

I worked in the world of disabilities for 12 years so I’ve seen a wide spectrum of situations as an employee so this isn’t completely new to me. I don’t feel I need it, but my contacts do and they all offered to support us in whatever way we wanted. When everyone I know in that world started offering to be my sons advocate for his first IEP meeting I was pretty overwhelmed because these are amazing people who care enough to take a morning off for this. These people just want the district to treat my son right from the beginning and want them to know they’re on my side in case I do start to disagree or feel unsupported. I actually chose the least intimidating of the bunch because I don’t want to be the psycho mom who brings all the guns out, just the right support at the right time. In this case I really wouldn’t mind another IEP expert in the room especially at the my first one for my son. They themselves have serious disabilities themselves and know what it’s like to be the student as well. Wouldn’t you want that in the room
At your first IEP meeting ever?

Makes sense. Was just wondering if there was a specific reason or situation going on. I’ve been to over 50 IEP meetings so I wouldn’t feel the need for that, but understandable if someone who hasn’t been to one would like additional support.
