Psychology is so interesting to me. During my undergrad class of child abuse and prevention, we had a discussion about nature vs. nuture. The question was, do you think some children are born with aggressiveness and violence or do you think their environment and upbringing molds them more? Some said one or the other and some said both. What do you think?

A mixture of both but I think it leans more towards nature then nurture. Genetics are a powerful thing. I’m adopted. I’ve only recently met my biological family. The similarities between us are incredible and we lived completely different lives. But yet, we all somehow turned out very much the same.

That's so true. I just recently started connecting with my half siblings and it's amazing how we share some of the same characteristics and traits all the while being raised in different homes. I believe there was a twin study done like this years ago where they separated the twins at birth to see how their upbringing molded who they were. Biology is definitely a huge factor

@miss_understood, it was triplets. There’s a movie about it. It’s actually a really terrible story.

I personally believe it’s a mixture of nature and nurture. I also believe that you can nurture the natural traits of an individuals personality. Think of CBT therapy take for example anxiety caused by a past event.. a psychologist will nurture you with ways to manage it, take Bipolar now it’s found that if a parent or even both suffer from it there’s a higher risk the child of that/those parents will suffer as genetics therefore medication may be used to balance the brain chemicals.

So yeah it has to be a mixture of the two.

Yup I believe that too. I'm wondering what causes some people, even after all the help and nurturing, to continue to remain the same. Is their brain chemistry so out of balance that nothing can be done or is it that the nurturing wasn't the right technique for them?

@miss_understood, different people/brains are different what might work for one individual may not work for another that’s why people are evaluated ect as we know and different techniques even different medication is used.

In my opinion I’d say it depends on the persons circumstances.

***trigger warning***

For example take a pedophile who’s committed a crime, most would say for some one to do that they are mentally unwell so if they was medicated before hand this unlawful act would have been prevented however this person has committed the crime and now on medication, once he’s done his time he’s released and commits a crime of the same nature so does this mean the medication doesn’t work or is this due to his past? Again it’s a mixture of the both.

Another thing murder

Is murdering someone animal instincts or is it mental health?

@erincharlieconor I always thought murder was more of an animal instinct. Some people just have it in them (whatever IT is) and others don't. You always hear about those people that grow up in great nurturing families and one day, they suddenly kill someone and the family can't understand why it happened because they thought the person was normal and that they did everything right in their upbringing. I believe biology plays a big role in all of us. So when people try to say "being gay is a choice. It's what your exposed to" I dont believe that. Some people are naturally that way from birth. Some people can't even believe asexuality exists. Some will try to say " you just never been with the right person, you'll find someone that will make you want sex" meanwhile, asexuals have absolutely no desire to have sex and probably never will no matter what environment they're in. Some things are just wired

I think it’s a mixture of both. All of my kids are different. Same mom and same father but they all have different strengths and talents. I think we are born with those traits. It’s just in our DNA.

If you grow up in a unhealthy household where there is violence or abuse I definitely think it can make those traits worse. Where as a loving home may teach you how to control those manners.

All of my kids have had their bad moments, just like we as parents do but I believe the way we handle it makes a difference down the road.

That's a good point because my grandmother had 8 kids and she always talked about how 4 of them were just always trouble. And of course she raised them all the same. But they never grew up to hurt anyone or be violent, they can just be angry and rude sometimes. So maybe the way she brought them up helped them to not get worse than they already were as they grew up.

I would say both. I think certain individuals are more naturally prone to aggression. I do also think parenting plays a role in addressing it and helping a child navigate it.

@ashleybradford92 I'm not sure if she's open to it. I think my family and myself are so afraid to suggest it now because way back then, she got offended as if we were blaming her for her daughter's behavior. We just dont want her going down the wrong road later in life

@miss_understood that is when I start to blame the parent. While most moms do get way too much criticism when someone is honestly just trying to help - with behavior she knows is unacceptable that is just a recipe for disaster. Its not her fault entirely the child is this way, everyone needs help with something. Don't harm your child for your pride. I do hope she sees it soon enough hun Ill have them both in my thoughts.

@ashleybradford92 thank you! And yes there comes a point where you have to do what's best for your child and stop being in denial

I do think some of it stems from being born like that with certain mental disabilities and such.

For example turrets. People with turrets tend to have anger issues.

But I also believe that it stems from the upbringing of a child. While I'm not aggressive at all. I do suffer from anxiety because of my fucked up childhood.

So do you think a parent or a child's guardians can change a their natural biological chemistry of being "aggressive" by their parenting styles and maybe being more nurturing? Or do you think all efforts are lost since they are wired that way?

@miss_understood

I don't think a parent can change them completely. But I do think that their parenting choices can make things worse instead of better. Or vise versa.
