Depending on what's happening depends on what can be done.

First, give your little lots of opportunities to speak. Ask lots of questions and wait for responses. Close proximations. Even just sylbles to start. Lllll for lait (mmmm for milk). Make them talk. One simple task that can be done is to give them lots of questions at breakfast. What should we have cereal or toast? Also give them their drinking glass empty and wait for a response. Clarify the problem (oh do you need a drink? Fill the glass only a little. Have them request more. Same with pouring cereal or with giving them a snack. Just provide lots of opportunities to speak. Wait for a response. If they act out give them the word needed or a sign to use. Baby sign language is good to use if you can incorporate it. One therapist often brings out toys that can only be used if requested from a shelf. Another one has them just words to play a game on her iPad or watch something. She pauses it from time to time using a remote that is out of reach for the child. Basically, encourage by providing lots of opportunities.

E.g What color crayon do you want? *one only offered at a time.

what pajama? This one or that one, cars or princess? *hid or limit too many options. If they pick something else they need to say what it is *kid grabs and waves trains* oh trains? *kid nods* trains? I'm not sure? *kid makes an approximation of the word* ahhhhhh yes Trains. Good job.

I wouldn't get to reading or even trying yet. My toddler cant do that yet, but has a crazy vocabulary.

I'd just work on expanding the mmmmm for more, have him add an extra sound before handing him something.

I worked with a few speech pathologists. They all recommended slowly offering things to help build language.

One boom that is recommended is "it takes two to talk". I'll find a video we were shown at work to help too. I can add it as well

If you're sending him to preschool when he's 3 they should have a speech therapist. I took my daughter for an assessment and he mentioned the school having someone (cuz here if she needed the help she wasn't allowed to see him and the schools speech therapist.)

That’s so disappointing I’m sorry. Flash cards help my little dude a lot. And alphabet books. Labeling things

Have you checked with your hospital? Some offer speech therapists there.

A year?!? That’s insane? Is that the only speech therapy place he can go to?
