How do some of you moms feel about the new law in New Jersey that schools are now required to teach children about the gay community starting in 2020 ??
This is a tough one! I don’t live in New Jersey wasn’t even aware this was a thing,but it could be confusing for kids what age do they plan on telling them? I feel like it is a part of the world and one of your own could decide they are part of that community so maybe they are trying to make kids more comfortable to talk about who they are? I don’t plan on hiding anything from my kids, I feel like today everything is open and there is no way of hiding anything, they will probably have friends with parents who are of the same sex or family members may be in same sex relationships. Kids will have questions and we should just be there to answer them.
The article didn’t say ! But I agree I feel like it may be confusing in a way to them depending on the age . Also with religion different people have their own beliefs and may not believe in this and don’t want their children learning about it . They may feel like they are sending their children to school to learn about things that will benefit their lives in to getting a career . Depending on the age I think it can be a good and bad thing it’s tough !
@franny.93, that’s true, some people have different beliefs and It wouldn’t be fair to push other beliefs on them.
I am in NJ and I have mixed feelings. We teach our kids to not judge other people but I would rather my kids talk to me openly about things like this and not have teachers telling them. It’s not that we are trying to hide the world from them but kids are still figuring themselves out and this may make things more confusing for them.
I feel that way as well , it should be the parents choice this is so touchy also religion , too many people have beliefs of their own and it can be made out like it’s being forced on kids .
@franny.93, exactly! If public schools don’t touch on religion then sexuality preferences should be left out too!
I completely disagree. Its a schools job to teach them reading writing math history these things. I don't think it's a schools place to teach them about sexuality. If my daughter has questions I hope she will come to me. Its ohkay to be gay 100% do you but I don't feel its a schools place to teach them about it at such a young age. But thats just me 🤷
@boys.everywhere I understand that there's a lot of things that are part of history that aren't taught in school. And personally I don't agree at all and if they ever pass that law here my daughter will be home schooled
@sleepymommy, that’s my opinion as well not enough history is being taught , to be honest they need to teach about balancing a check book credit scores how to manage money . Things that will really do children good . My school was excellent but definitely lacked real life lessons.
@franny.93 YASSSSSS.!!!!! I took a consumers math class in high school to make up credits it taught us how to balance a check book how to shop when things are on sale it was the best class I could have ever taken. They need to learn life skill not life styles
I'm not against gays. We have gay friends and all. But teaching it in school is a big no for me.
I feel like it should be the parents choice to decide whether or not they want their child to learn 🤷🏻♀️
I think it's great! It will lessen bullying against LGBT students. And it will let LGBT students who are struggling or confused know that they are normal and they don't need to be ashamed of who they are.

There definitely should be a standardized way to do it - I can see some of the “teachers” just going off on a rant ( either pro or against LGBQT). And then you have a mess.
I have no opinion as of now. We did move to NJ from NYC for the school district- but the more I learn about American school system - the more likely I am to put my kids in private UN school.
Completely agree ! I think parents will end up removing and home schooling their children as well as private school .
It should be up to parents what they want to teach their kid about. Not the state to mandate classroom instruction
I’m not discriminating towards any human regardless of sexual orientations religious beliefs lifestyles etc However children especially young ones are extremely impressionable and that’s what makes me nervous about the way some of these babies are being raised to make their own decisions about damn near everything like there’s no structure no parenting. With that being said I think certain things should be spoken about at home I don’t think the school should teach kids about social things like this. Now if it was something to be learned academically from speaking on the LGBT community like a history lesson or something I guess that would be ok.
@erincharlieconor, now a days if you don’t agree with something it’s an ISSUE people are too sensitive !
I could understand in high school having a group discussion etc with a counselor for those wanting more advice or those who are questioning but it’s not appropriate for teachers to push this on little kids. It’s something parents should chose to discuss.
Honestly I disagree it seems that they are really pushing it and It will confuse the children the school has no right to be teaching about lifestyles they should be teaching the children life skills like other ladies mention balancing checkbook credit score entrepreneur things like that not about lifestyle that should be up to the parents.
Correct , in a way they’re taking that right away from parents to choose what they want their children to be exposed to . And it depends on the age that they are going to start this as well
Yes they have no right to impose their ideas in our children that is up to the parents and then like you said if you disagree people are too sensitive everybody has their own opinion and not try to impose our views in others and I feel that by the school teaching that they are imposing their views in our children regardless of what the parents think and I don’t think is fair in my opinion.
I honestly think it's a great idea to teach them about it young so they don't grow up judging people, and so they feel like they can be who they want to be and it's ok. Regardless if the parents want there kids being taught it or not it's already out in the world so why not have your kids learn the proper knowledge on it. There really is no difference in this, and learning about black history, or about the native Americans,sadly there are people out there that are still racist but imagine how many more people would be if it wasn't taught in school.
Umm depends on what age they teach it I would think. Late middle school/High school aged, I think would be appropriate. I mean by that time they WILL know about difference sexual orientations/ lifestyles etc so why not be educated to treat all equal and try to reduce homophobic bullying? It's not imposing the lifestyle on one, it's simple educating. You cant "hide" it from your children if you don't want them to know about it or feel they should go to you to ask...its in the world. Around them / their peers. Just like they have Sex-Ed in most school for a semester around 6th grade....not much of a difference. Better to be educated than be in the dark or secluded from what's reality.
It all depends on the age of children though , if we’re talking high school or college then go ahead but any younger than that . At that age if it’s a concern to start from the beginning to accept LGBT then parents should tell their children their are different walks of life and it’s ok to be different it’s a lifestyle really . Following the school should when dealing with young kids repeat it’s ok to be different and accept everyone . I’m sure other parents wouldn’t be accepting of a 5 year old learning about sexuality . But schools are in a way forcing it upon kids (if they are starting from very young) .
