I wanted to take off the week before baby is due but my work is saying my STD and fmla wouldn't cover that :/ does anyone have experience with this. They are going to strip my membrains starting 38 weeks and I work so far from my hospital if it triggers labor.

When I lived in CA, you could take up to 4 weeks before the birth and 6 to 8 weeks after depending on if it was a vaginal delivery or c-section

So they are saying that std won't kick into place till the "event " happens . All my paperwork is in .... They said I could use leave but I won't get short term disability till baby . But I need 2 weeks of leave for my short term Disability before it kicks in. The whole thing seems like such a mess

Your HR will know the details specific to your workplace. But what you're describing sounds about right. STD is triggered by the event itself, then there's a wait period before you actually get any money from it (mine is either 4 or 7 weeks, but it probably varies a lot depending on your plan).

Can you take unpaid leave? Or get a dr note to start FMLA early? I'd just use vaca or sick time if you have it.

I believe that STD would be triggered by the actual birth so that wouldn’t start until the baby is born. At least that’s how my employers plan worked (unless you’re medically unable to work). But FMLA should be able to be used beforehand if your doctor approves it for medical purposes. With my son, I had a membrane sweep at 39 weeks 4 days and my contractions started 2 hours later while I was at work but it wasn’t a dramatic onset of labor. I had plenty of time to go home and take a shower, do laundry, eat, and get ready for the hospital before my contractions were consistent enough to warrant going to L&D. It was about 3 hours before I was checked into the hospital. Then my son was born 12 hours later. With my daughter my contractions started at 2:00 am and I didn’t need to go to the hospital until 6:00 am. She was born 13 hours later. It’s rare that labor is super urgent. So if you’re unable to get approved for leave beforehand, try not to stress out about it. 😊

In California we are allowed to take off one month prior to due date.

Short term Disability

Gotcha. I live in California as well. I took off one month before my due date for disability and then got another 6 weeks after I had my baby. I'm currently on paid family leave (baby bonding) do you not qualify or what?

Did your doctors office not give you the information to complete the application online?
