Is Preschool a Necessity or Can Children Start Kindergarten Without It?

What do you think about preschool? Do you think it's a necessity or will children enter kindergarten just fine without it?

Ultimately, it's your choice. I plan on homeschooling/unschooling my son next year for kindergarten but, he's been in Pre-K since last year bc he needs speech therapy.

I think knot depends on the child. My oldest only went to 1 year of preschool. He didn’t really need it but I figured it was something for him to do. My daughter however needs preschool. She was behind for her age. Between that and speech she is finally caught up

Idk how it is in PA but if kids here don't meet certain milestones, they can't be accepted into kindergarten. So if parents are having a hard time. getting their kids to reach certain points with learning, like they have to be able to count to a certain number, know their alphabet, tie their shoes, etc and they aren't getting there, then preschool is kind of a necessity

I didn't even look into that. Good point

They do get bored so easily though, so if your not doing pre k you definitely have to plan a ton for them to do. Library time, crafts, zoo trips etc.

My son only did preschool for 2 months so he got somewhat of a feel for how school works. I personally think he probably would have done fine without it, but what he did go to was definitely beneficial.

I think it also depends on the child a lot. My son adapts very well to new situations, but my daughter I can already tell does not so pre k might be even more beneficial for her.

Kids also pick up on things so quickly, it’s amazing how fast they learn.

Both of my boys went to preschool. My 4 year old is in preschool now and loves it. He has made so many changes, it’s amazing! He goes 5 half days because he gets speech but I highly recommend preschool!

I teach 1st grade and my mom teaches pre k. I think it is so important. There are so many things they learn in pre school from how to be around lots of kids to how to behave at carpet time, How to walk in a line, and a million small things that help make the transition to kindergarten easier.

I keep seeing moms post about bullies on here with children 3, 4 and even 5 years old. Have you noticed that with any of your first graders? Because I don't remember elementary being cruel, it was really the fun years as I recall it.

@miss_understood In my personal experience, the term bullying gets used sometimes when feelings are hurt when they are 7. I'd have little ones say so and so is bullying me, when I inquire as to what happened it's typically been something small, took the crayon I wanted, doesn't want to play with me type thing. Kids can be mean to each other, but to me bullying is repeated and consciously mean. Most kiddos I've taught dont fall into those categories. Typically all I have to say to them is " was that necessary or kind?" And the offending party apologizes. I understand there are exceptions, but that's been my experience.

My oldest daughter is in vpk & she loves it. It’s been so helpful & she’s learned so much more than she was with us teaching at home. She’s always been a social kid but never was around kids unless we went to the playground or to visit family so she has blossomed even more being around kids her age & having friends. I think preschool is a good idea. Next year when she goes to kindergarten it won’t be that much of a shook to her cause shell already be use to the school schedule. She’ll just have to adjust going all day & not going home at 11:30.

That's great! I don't want my daughter to be shocked when she gets to kindergarten so I'm considering on exposing her to what it will be like through preschool

I think preschool is important. My son went. I wish I would have started him a year earlier. He is in kindergarten now and a lot of his classmates from pre-K are in his class. I saw a huge change from the first day of pre k to the last day. It gets them socialized and it also allows them to learn school expectations but at a less strict level if that makes sense. So when it’s time for kindergarten and on they are definitely ready. In his school, they learned so much, they had homework 5 nights a week, nap time which they don’t have in kindergarten. With my daughter I’m going to start her in head start and I will put her in pre k.

I would imagine it matures them a little bit. I'm thinking about it

I think it’s a good idea just so the kids can get an idea of how it’ll be when they start kindergarten.

I think socially its important just to warm them up before the actual importance of education begins

Yea the social thing is my biggest concern. I want her to know how to make friends and share so it'll be a smoothe transition.

I had my son in it and he loved it, he was the only child in the family so i digieres he would get some interaction with other kids his age and also benefit from learning and so far for me it worked out great.

That's where I'm at. My daughter isn't really around other kids because my friend's kids differ in age and she's the only child in the family. So I don't want her to be socially awkward

Well it’s up to you you’re choice . I didn’t just because that’s me but my girls were fine without it and they are good

I wasn't sure because I was thinking there's extra things they teach the kids at preschool that can be really helpful in kindergarten. Did they adapt well to the other kids when they entered kindergarten?
