Just a friendly reminder about Solids...
Solids are anything beyond breastmilk or formula. This includes: cereals, juices, purée, etc.
Not only is 6 months an important milestone, but there are also other factors that should ALL be met before introducing: sitting unsupported, loss of tongue thrust, pincher grasp are huge. These ensure your baby isn’t at risk for, amongst other things, choking. Baby being interested is very low on that list. Babies are curious, babies mimic- this does not mean they are ready to eat.
Feeding solids too soon puts your child at risk for long term gut damage, obesity, diabetes, poor eating habits, chrons, IBS, celiacs, food allergies and more.
Also- remember, just because your baby has the ability to eat foods, they do not have the digestive enzymes to break down and process the nutrients. They will just eliminate them as waste and not get what they need. They need breastmilk and/or formula until 1 because of this.
“Well I fed mine at x age and they are fine”: you don’t know this unfortunately. These things aren’t seen until late teens and early adulthood. Will some kids be fine? Yes. Is it worth the risk? No. Once you know, it’s too late.
“My Pedi said so”: most pediatricians are not up to date on infant nutrition. The WHO and AAP say 6 months, if your pedi goes against that question WHY they’d go against the recommendation and research of their peers.
“My baby is hungry”: be sure you’re pace feeding. It should take 5 mins per ounce when done properly. This is because you don’t want to stretch their bellies and it also takes time for their hormones to trigger a “full” feeling. Then— feed baby more formula or breastmilk.
“My baby is advanced”: sure. We all think that. However, they can’t turn 6 months early. And for preemie mamas- this means 6 months adjusted.
“My baby has reflux”: cereal for reflux is an outdated treatment. It should be used as a last resort after all other options have been exhausted and all testing has been completed. And for those who argue there’s formula with cereal- no that’s rice starch not cereal. That’s a topping for later though.
Don’t believe me? Here are some links (including Canada and the WHO since location is sometimes brought up as an argument)

Oh and also I read the other day this women how jumped in on a argument who clearly did NOT understand that baby purées n cereal etc are called solids. It scares me
I definitely agree with this post. I did all of this for my daughter when she started losing weight on just formula since I couldn't breastfeed. She was already small under 6 pounds at Birth at full term and to this day is still very small but my daughters doctor recommended I start her on solids at 5 and 1/2 months and that's when she started gaining weight. I wanted to wait a lot longer but I didn't know what else to do.
Weight isn't all that's important though. There are other routes for weight gain that is nutritionally better. Like fortifying formula. At least she was close to 6 months.
🙌🏻🙌🏻 @laniejay at it again with the good info. 😂
But really, if it wasn't for bb I probably would have started solids way too early. I didn't know the risks until I saw people talking about open gut and then I started researching it.
Just saying...if I hadn't found bb when I was pregnant I would have probably been that ignorant mom that listened to everyone. My mil gave sil cereal in a bottle (because of health issues) and told me to do the same because it would help him sleep. My mom tried feeding T at 5m. I'm so glad I found all this stuff out beforehand.
Same! Bb taught me so much. Great job with this post too @laniejay,
it pissed me off that everyone including my MIL & own mother tried forcing me to feed my daughter early. “well i put cereal in your bottle at 2 weeks.” GOOD FOR YOU. but my kid came out of my vagina, therefor what i say goes. 🤷🏼♀️ i just don’t understand the rush. we often reflect and say how much we miss our children being babies, but then don’t even realize that while they’re babies, we’re rushing them out of it! health risks just weren’t worth it to me. and we waited until 6 months.
I fed my first cereal in a bottle at 8 weeks 😞. We didn't have a wealth of information at our fingertips back then and that's what was recommended. Know better, do better. To live in a repetitive cycle against all this information is crazy. I don't get it
@laniejay, my daughter is still young, so i’m thankful for all of the new information we’re getting every year. i knew during my pregnancy it wasn’t safe, and swore i’d never do things that weren’t in her best interest. i don’t understand how people just say screw it and wing it. 😬
Holy moly This is longer then a Harry Potter book lol
@boymom123 seriously, they'll research the shit out of what's the best nail salon... and then just shove a spoonful of food in their baby's mouth becuase they looked at them when they ate

My son wasn’t gaining weight nor growing to fast at 4 months he was 6lbs 9ozs at birth n 8lbs but his doctor recommended a lottttt of smaller bottle feedings n to wait on solids. The thing is though, I did my research before hand like way beforehand when I was pregnant lol and I wanted to wait till 6months no matter what his doctor said.
But I did find it interesting my mom said me n my brother had very high metabolisms and the doctor instructed her to feed us solids sooner.. but from everything I’ve read that wouldn’t help at all... formula formula formula or breastmilk whatever ur using..
I saw the other day a women tlking abt finger foods for her daughter n abt her gagging once and that would scare the life outta me..
I don’t see the rush
