I need to rant I know it will sound like not my business but we are involved so my husband great grandmother passed two years ago my husband grandma let my mother in law have the house. my mil offer her house to us to rent but we turned down the offer because we didn't want to mix business with family plus the place needs fixing and we don't have the time or money to do so well my mother in law offered the house to her niece (my husband cousin) well they are living there and fixing it up and not paying rent and yet they have money to go on vacation and no I'm not jealous because they go on vacation we can but we never want to save the money for it. I told her my sister in law told her and my brother in law told her hey you need to asking them about rent yea they are fixing up the place but still they had a agreement about paying rent well my mother in law called needing to barrow money for gas this week my husband wants to give to her but I think maybe we she mention to her that she needs to ask them about the rent

If now she’s asking you for gas money then I would definitely bring it because obviously she needs it.

If you didn't want to get mixed up in this before, don't. Let your mother in law deal with her niece. It's her responsibility and no need to add pressure to her. If she is already dealing with it or hasn't, you shouldn't follow up. If your mother in law needs a little gas money that's ok. You can ask her when you should get it back (if it's a loan) or make sure she is doing ok. It could just be a bad month or bills came out at not the right times. It sucks, but I'd keep out of it. If your mother in law asks for help or asked for advice, sure, offer some. Otherwise I'd stay out of it all.

Most likely if we give her any money we won't get it back she work part time and shes struggling she thought the rent would help her but their not paying it

maybe it would or maybe not. Honestly I'd let her decide that on her own. She knows what she feels she wants to do about it. And if it gets too expensive financially you can always reminder her of her options. But for a 1 time request, I wouldn't bring it up.

Id bring it up but if she don't get her rent then it is on her. Not much you can really do. She shouldn't let it be like that but it's her deal and if she doesn't do anything that's on her. You can keep bringing it up but doesn't mean she will listen.
