I think these days it is just a title. I do not remember my god parents doing anything for me. I did not know them either. Just that they were church friends of ours.
my godparents just treated me like one of their children that didn't live with them. i got gifts every holiday, they celebrated events with us like family would. if anything happened to my parents, they would've been the ones to care for me. but i never expected things from them and they've always been there for me. i used to call my godmother my fairy god mother.
but i've gotten offers from COWORKERS to be my child's godparent like??? you don't even know my child's birthday, they just want to BE a godparent. smh

Yes and to teach the child about God. They should also be active in the child's life in case something happens to the parents.

Their supposed to spiritually guide the child. I think people expect presents and all that sort of stuff.
