What do you even do with a child who when you tell him no for screaming(not crying) and he burst into tears and cries and screams even louder and acts like he needs to be comforted. No, we don't physically discipline him and no, we aren't going to start. My mother did with us over every little thing well into our early teens and I resent that woman more than anything. So spanking is not an option. He started screaming this time because he poured his juice on the floor purposely and I told him he can't do that, and won't give him another cup of juice. I know he'll pour it out again. So I told him no and put the cup in the sink and he proceeded to start screaming bloody murder. I told him no and to stop and he's now screaming and crying over it and refuses to stop. I know giving in and coddling him will just reinforce it, so I don't. But he literally tries to climb me trying to get me to hold and hug him. I don't know what to do and this DEFINITELY needs to stop before we have this second child. This is a several times a day thing. He does it every time I tell him no or won't let him do something. We don't give into him, so he already knows it doesn't work, but won't stop. He's also impossible to communicate with after he's started, and these fits can last longer than 20 minute. Time out does not work.

I ignore the screaming or redirect if possible. Eventually they'll learn that screaming doesn't get them what they wanted but this is something that needs to be conditioned. My four year still has tantrums every once in a while but they are short lived and I do not cave.

I do ignore it. I've tried redirecting with toys, his favorite TV show too, and he throws himself at the floor and screams even louder.

When mine throws a tantrum over stuff like that, I don’t react at all. I just tell him to let me know when he’s done and I walk away.

When my youngest son acts like that and nothing works we just ignore him and he stops after a couple mins.. He does it pretty often if he doesn't get his way!

his dad came home about 15 mins ago. But he cried until the second his dad walked in and then wanted to be all cute for Daddy. So he's stopped now. Thank God his dad came home early.

He's still learning and probably also senses all the changes that are about to come. Just be patient it may get worse before it's better but ignoring the behavior is key.

Girrrrl we ignore my 3 yr old and keep it pushing.
It’s not much you can do.

First I commend you for not hitting him. I agree with ignoring the tantrums. We walk away so he thinks we can't see or hear him.

I've tried that too. He just follows me and continues screaming. I've tried closing the door almost completely so he can't see me and he just screams even louder.

I do what blueismycolor does exactly. He arill has tantrums but not as many and he has learned that when i walk away theres no point so he stops....most of the time.

Just keep going, he will realise screaming won’t get him anywhere and give up eventually. I’ve said this before on this app but, because we did baby sign language with my son, he was able to say sorry or ask for more etc so he literally had no excuse to scream. I’d say to him to calm down then leave it up to him when he was ready to talk and say sorry. We still do it now but he hardly ever even bothers to tantrum now because he knows it won’t get him anywhere and things are much nicer if he just follows the rules (he’s 3 in March)

I also try and stay as calm as possible when he’s being naughty, I don’t ever want him to realise that his screaming gets any kind of reaction from me/ gets me flustered. This goes for whether we’re at home, play group, out eating dinner etc. He had a huge melt down in a cafe once and I just stayed calm and he got over it then I spoke to him again as if everything was normal (after he had apologised). One lady came over to me and said she doesn’t know how I did it and she would have given in to her son. It was hard but we’ve never had that issue again !
