Has Anyone Refused Vitamin K Shot and Eye Serum at Birth?

Will anyone or has anyone turned down the vitamin k shot at baby’s birth and the eye serum (ilotycin) ?

I don’t know how it works over there, but over here in the area of New York I am if you turn down the vitamin k the staff is legally obligated to inform cps of your decision.

There’s was question if my second son received the shot in the hospital or not. He started actively bleeding after his circumcision. We had to rush him to the ER.

I strongly recommend it.

So i completely agree, unless the baby goes thru any trama , or something goes wrong then vitamin k drops and or shot is not needed because our breast milk and colostrum has it naturally , along with what we eat high in vitamin k , along with baby naturally producing vitamin k at day 8 of life .

I bought it for just in case , it was recommended but only if something goes wrong in my opinion . I’m also delaying cord clamping .

I agree ! I will give my child the shot and serum only if I have too like you said because of trauma or needed surgery or something . But more than likely non of those things will happen .

Part 1:

I think the question that everyone misses is this? Are babies born deficient in Vitamin K?

Why do they think this is?

Did our creator make a mistake?

from a sperm and egg to bone, muscles and a brain capable of doing things at birth that even the most sophisticated computers cannot duplicate...yet God forgot to give them adequate Vitamin K at birth so that Man has to step in and Fix that mistake?

that is utterly foolish...

a newborn's natural prothrombin levels reach normal levels between days 5 and 7, peaking around the eighth day of life, related to the buildup of bacteria in baby's digestive tract to produce the vitamin K that is necessary to form this clotting factor. Day 8 is said to be the only time in a baby's life when his prothrombin level will naturally exceed 100 percent of normal

First, in order to absorb vitamin K we have to have a functioning biliary and pancreas system.

**Your infant’s digestive system isn’t fully developed at birth which is why we give babies breast milk (and delay solids) until they are at least 6-months-old, and why breast milk only contains a small amount of highly absorbable vitamin K.

Too much vitamin K could tax the liver and cause brain damage (among other things). As baby ages and the digestive tract, mucosal lining, gut flora, and enzyme functions develop, baby cant process more vitamin K. Low levels of vitamin K at birth just…makes…sense. ???

**Secondly, cord blood contains stem cells, which protect a baby against bleeding and perform all sorts of needed repairs inside an infant’s body. Here’s the kicker, in order for a baby to get this protective boost of stem cells, cord-cutting needs to be delayed and the blood needs to remain thin so stem cells can easily travel and perform their functions. Imagine that, baby has his/her own protective mechanism to prevent bleeding and repair organs…that wasn’t discovered until after we started routinely giving infants vitamin K injections.

**Third, a newborn might have low levels of vitamin K because it’s intestines are not yet colonized with bacteria needed to synthesize it and the “vitamin K cycle” isn’t fully functional in newborns. It makes sense then to bypass the gut and inject vitamin K right into the muscle right? Except baby’s kidneys aren’t fully functional either.

**Fourth, babies are born with low levels of vitamin K compared to adults, but this level is still sufficient to prevent problems..

Finally, several clinical observations support the hypothesis that children have natural protective mechanisms that justify their low vitamin K levels at birth . I don’t know about you, but we should probably figure out why that is before we “inject or give drops now and worry about it later.”

pretty silly, if a baby cannot assimilate any form other than the mothers own from BM..why do we give it?

if mom breastfeeds then the baby gets it from her.

Unrestricted access to the breast in the early days after birth is important, due to the higher levels of vitamin K in colostrum. The importance of early feeding has been recognized since the 1940's. Babies who have been fed within their first 24 hours have significantly better coagulation times than babies not fed until after 24 hours.2

Vitamin K levels in the breast milk rise markedly in response to the mother eating vitamin K rich foods or taking vitamin K supplements.

It is essential that, to receive the full complement of vitamin K in breast milk, the baby completely finishes one breast before being offered the other. Any practice that involves restricting either the baby's time at the breast or the number of feeds will not allow the baby to receive optimum amounts of vitamin K and will also prolong the time it takes for the baby's intestine to be colonized by friendly, vitamin K manufacturing bacteria

ask yourself this....Do you want to interrupt this natural process that we will never understand?

some mothers choose drops without fully realizing the possible harm it can cause

think about this and THIS is the reasoning behind the K at birth in Any form...Think about this

"Research in 1937 found that K levels in ""normal"" neonates were between 30-60% 'adult levels', falling to 15-30% on day two, and then gradually rising again until about day 8-10. This research led to the continuing belief that these low levels in the newborn are a 'deficiency' and need to be corrected". Huh??

This is the entire evidence used to justify the use of K at birth in any form..FEAR is the only reason its used at all

now even IF they needed it and IF a baby could even use it in any form..30 and 60 is a vast difference in numbers BUT drops and shots are given as one size fits all...??

remember, those are Adult numbers it was compared against..

a Child is a Gift..one we should not be messing with..a gift that is beautifully wrapped, perfectly created and comes complete...no batteries(K) needed.

Part 2:

Vit k

Polysorbate 80 (brand names include Alkest, Canarcel and Tween)

@mychemicalshaymance, why don’t you spend time and do your own research then ?

I have had 3 years of this and I really don’t have the time to sit here and give you sources . You find the sources and choose for your own what’s best?

If you think it’s needed then go for it .

I don’t .

@mamamei Because it's your opinion to prove, not mine. And anecdotes and opinions are just that, anecdotes and opinions. I don't submit college essays and tell my professors to defend my viewpoint or paper.

@mychemicalshaymance, again , she asked for opinion . I gave her my knowledge. If you want more then that then research and find your own sources mama. I don’t have time to do it for you.

I have a holistic pediatrician, and he recommend the vitamin k1 drops . It’s not given all at once, its spread out thru 13 weeks and like I said doesn’t have the synthetic crap vaccines have . To each there own.

I’m all about natural . And if that bothers you then , it’s a good thing you can have the choice to be you then huh.

I’ve done my research and I stand firm in natural is best .

Thanks .

Where's this research? I want case backed evidence. And scholarly articles. Something you can submit as a college essay. Not links that end in '.com'.

Im not , I’m doing an oral vitamin k1 infant drops instead . They don’t have the toxic synthetic crap vaccines have along with the amount of aluminum found in each vaccine and the eye goop is only if you had vaginal birth and you where positive for strep B , or std. If not , it’s not needed. And the hepatitis b vaccine is also not needed , unless your baby is born with sexual diseases or plans on hanging out with drug addicts .

I did see the drops are a better alternative to the shot but I feel like if the baby is getting enough vitamin k from me it doesn’t need the drops or shot. All I eat pretty much is foods rich I’m vitamin k and fruits. I will continue to be tested for infections the closer I get to delivery to make sure I’m ok so the baby doesn’t need the eye serum unless other wise. I also don’t plan on giving my child vaccinated. My son isn’t and was not vaccinated. I been researching for a long time .

Not the vit K or eye serum, but didn’t do Hepotitis for any of them. I ask whats it for before having anything injected into my baby, and they said if you or your partner have it baby can get it from you. Well we don’t have it!!!! And they actually said- oh you don’t have to its just what we offer to everyone.

That’s what I hate most . They put everyone in this box and just assume that everyone is the same. Then in some places don’t even give you a option. I agree , if me and my partner don’t have any infections or stds why should I give my child a eye serum. Same with vitamin k , I have been eating almost like a vegetarian I think baby will be just fine.

Sorry to hear that. Beings though I know that the vitamin k shot is just Incase you have a lack of vitamin k and don’t produce enough to give to the baby I am not to worried about that because i have been stocking up a lot of my vitamin k and the baby gets plenty of it and will continue too. And beings though I don’t have std or infections for now I won’t be doing the eye Serum of course unless the closer I get I have an infection then of course I’ll go for it or both of medically necessary.

You can give the baby vitamin k naturally through eating foods rich in vitamin k so that the baby doesn’t need the shot. And the eye serum if you don’t have a infection or std prior to giving birth the baby doesn’t need it either. It’s just extra things to give the baby that baby’s do not need. That’s like saying take this drug for liver poison and you don’t have liver poison. And with the vitamin k shot baby’s liver also doesn’t start to work until days after birth so the shot is also just sitting in the baby doing god knows what. Natural is best !

The ointment is put in the eyes to prevent neonatal conjunctivitis (pink eye) which can cause blindness, & the vitamin k shot is to help with blood clotting. ... with low levels of vitamin K, some babies can have very severe bleeding ,sometimes into the brain, causing brain damage. I wouldn’t turn any of those down.

@dope.ass.mom, if a mother is planning on not giving her child the shot or eye serum she should be tested regularly to make sure she can do so especially closer she gets to delivery date especially knowing that not everyone shows symptoms of infections or std. The mother also should be eating lots and lots of vitamin k which is all the shot is . If you have high amounts of it then it’s nothing to worry about. If the mom doesn’t have an infection or std the baby won’t go blind. Yes some states don’t allow it which isn’t fair because mothers should be able to make own choices. I think it’s more of a chance trusting what they are giving the kids then what we are excepting from them. Baby’s did just fine hundreds of years ago.
