After telling a 12 and 14 year old the same things over and over almost daily for an entire year... and yet they still "forget" to do the things theyve been told... are they really forgetting or do they just flat out not care? I realize there is a period of adjustment... but an entire year of constant reminding? Theyve adjusted to everything else just fine already. (new school, new friends, ect.) So what is it? Still adjusting or rebelling?

They just don't want to do whatever your asking them to do.

Sounds like my boys, we’ve told our oldest,14, for over a year he is not allowed to have a tv in his room. He recently bought himself an Xbox 1 on Black Friday I went down to the basement Sunday (where his room is and game room with a tv) and he had moved tv into his room to play games. I was furious but claims he forgot we had told him that

Yall they are driving me crazy. They forget to do simple tasks like make their beds or put dishes in the sink and not leave them all over my house or forget to track dirt all over my living room but.... they dont forget to whine when my husband blocks their stupid apps on their phones because they cant remember basic junk like take a shower and brush your teeth.

@coffee.leggings.target heck no. They are my husbands brothers. Dfcs placed them with us because their mom is a drug addict.

@fourkidsandababy, Oh wow. That’s tough. Well I don’t know the mom but I would assume all these simple rules like making beds and brushing teeth were never enforced before now because they’re kind of old to have to be reminded about such small things. They honestly really might be forgetting. Very sad. Good luck with your situation.

@coffee.leggings.target it's just really hard to believe that after being told something every day for a year that they still forget. When they dont forget to do things they WANT to do.

These are also the same kids who told my husband that for me and my husband go go out on dates was not fair because they had to stay with a sitter and didn't get to go and have fun too. That it wasnt fair because they were left out. Uh, our kids dont go on our dates either. 🙄

I feel the exact same about my 16yr old step daughter. You have to even remind her to bathe us that bad.

@momof3dragons I dont even have to ask that question with these two. She taught them nothing. As long as they got out of her way she didnt care where they went or what they did.
Nicole Matthews··
@momof3dragons she was 13 and my husbands dad was in his 30s when they got together. She was 15 when she got pregnant. Shes been addicted to pain pills their entire lives.

@fourkidsandababy that's sad. Sorry to hear that. Idk what's wrong with my step daughter lol we have her permanently now because her mom was hitting her so she lives with us but shes 16 and that's what's frustrating I have to tell her to brush her teeth even she takes meds and does good remembering those. Can't even make ramen noodle and ive showed her several times.

When you grow up in a very unstructured home you don’t learn to do those basic things and you don’t think to do them because they’ve never been told to do them before. Even though they’ve been told not to do certain things before they try them again because the inconsistency prior to living with you means they probably were able to get away with those things just to get our if their mom’s hair. Honestly it takes a lot of healing when you grow up with such a shitty parent. They probably won’t care much about their hygiene until they’re a little older they start to become more conscious of it.

I understand that. But they are old enough to realize that disrespecting the person who took you in is not ok. The biggest issue is how they treat my husband daily. Which is like an absolute effing dog. Regardless of what theyve been through that's not something I'll put up with. My 4 and 2 year old are picking up on some of the smart ass comments they make and have started saying them toward me and their dad. Not okay.
