Depends on the situation. If you're trying to sleep train a baby in their own room or bed then that method can be helpful but if your trying to get your 5m old to sleep through the night without a bottle or something then it's not recommended because 5m is still a little young.

I don't like it but sometimes it's the only way.

I have never been comfortable letting my son cried out. There has always been something I can do to help him. Although he is now getting his molars in and last night in the middle of the night wouldn’t stop crying and nothing could calm him so I just laid him in the bed next to us until he was calm enough to latch and go back to sleep.

I think it depends on the child, their age, why they're crying, and the strength of the tears. I won't let him cry hard enough or long enough that he makes himself sick, but I will let him cry if he's just mad that I wouldn't let him have/do whatever he's not allowed to. But I can usually tell if his tears are fake or real. As a newborn, they only cry if they need something, even just cuddles, so I tried not to let him cry (unless I really needed to do dishes or shower for a few minutes). As they get older, though, crying changes. I'd still listen to them, and if the cries are real cries I wouldn't leave him alone, but if they were just 'I don't wanna go to bed I want to play!' cries I'd wait a little bit.

Definitely age depending. Before 6 months old, I don’t believe in crying it out. I took a child psychology course and learned that babies don’t develop a sense of “manipulation” before 6 months old, meaning if they’re crying, they’re crying because there is something wrong. It isn’t until 6 months that they are crying because they realize you come running.

I started letting my son cry after 6 or 7 months for 10 minutes at a time, before I went in there, soothed, and tried again. Eventually he got it, and he was sleeping through the night in his own crib within days.

You can sleep train without cry it out. I did it with my 3 and they are all great sleepers. Now, I will say that there is a difference in crying and whining. If they were just whining, I’d let them be. If they started crying, I’d go in and comfort without picking them up, leave the room when they were calm and try again.

That's what they did in the old days and we grew up with respect and learned the world doesn't revolve around us lol no but seriously, I think it teaches them that mommy is not going to jump everytime you want. You can tell the difference between a "I'm in pain cry" and " I need attention cry" if you just finished cuddling, feeding or playing with your baby and they still want attention, I think it's best to let them cry it out.

And I agree that age is a factor too like others have said.

There are different ways to approach it. It’s not always a negative thing.
