Dog rant!

We’ve had our large dog for 10 years. For the most part he was an outside dog until a year or so ago. He would go crazy ( bite the door and start bleeding to come in.) I have allergies so I’m not a dog person. We bought a huge kennel this fit him comfortably so he can stay inside for the most part. He did good, that lasted a year until a few months ago he’d go crazy and do the same thing to get out of the cage. My husband bought 2 large sections of carpet for the 2 living rooms. While we are home we is behaved and stays on either carpet. My 16 year old and myself let him out several times a day. With that being said when we are asleep or gone he pisses and craps on my expensive area carpet and sometimes our rugs and tile. I’m going crazy because no matter what I do I smell piss and I’m so grossed out. My 5 year old plays on these floors! My husband and son can live like this but I can’t! I’m going to start working soon and he cannot be home range free . We’ve had him so long and I’m gonna be the bad guy if I surrender him.

Is he a working dog breed? Sounds like he is easily bored and needs to move around. Most large dogs need to be fairly active. They are not “lap dogs”. Anxieties may cause these behaviors and or maybe there is an underline issue. So he only urinates when no one is around?

I would also recommend seeing the vet. He is a 10yr old and may have issues he is not able to verbally tell his owners.

How much attention is he getting?

Do any of you take him to exercise? (Not just let him out to go to the bathroom) Getting more exercise usually helps tremendously.

He needs to see a vet, being old or just in general he could have medical problems.

It can also be the kennel and him acting out. He has already shown that he doesn't like it. Maybe try phasing the kennel out, leave it open when you are home so he has the option of going in and out as he pleases so it turns into a safe space. Get hi. Toys that stimulate his brain for when you are gone or at night time.

You can't really expect a dog to just sit on one section of carpet and be happy.

Lol seriously

Did you not read my previous comments where he roams the house, goes to the park every day and plays in the back yard. Move on...

I have allergies to dogs too, and I used to get livid about cleaning up after my dog when she peed on purpose in new houses or our house in general. Because I would have to clean it up (Obsessive cleaning disorder not my husband's fault.) But I would get shitty and make it clear that it was not allowed by any means. Dogs need to understand who is the leader of the pack and what role they play. But if you've already done such and such; I would just get a heavy duty crate and keep them in there for the duration of the time you leave the house. I can give you some tips on that if you need help with getting them adjusted to it. Kip loves her crate.

But there is also the odor cleaning spray for pets that you can get anywhere. Takes that smell right out of that area. Just soak the carpet in it and use a towel, rag, or paper towels to get rid of the excess nasty.

@mmgarcia81 I can find you pictures if you want. And don't worry about any of the negative comments alright? I watched a dog live outside on the chain for years (not something I supported due to his situation) but he died from cancer tumors that popped up out of nowhere. We couldn't let him inside because our mother was a hoarder and was extremely against it; I'm glad you let the dog in your house even if you may be anxious about your allergies. I've been there. To reassure you though, the amount of inside time and outside time that you give them is common for all dogs. My husband's parents leave their dogs out 90% of the time in the backyard depending on the weather and usually the time adds up pretty close to being a few hours or more.

@amandaladams2017, thank you

I appreciate your kindness. If we knew of a loving family to take him in we would. Unfortunately no one wants a huge pit bull that’s 10 years old. He’s never been aggressive towards anyone, even strangers. A lot of people are apprehensive about them. We’ve had him for 10 years and have always loved him as part of the family. We won’t surrender him because chances are slim to none he’d be adopted and they’d probably put him down. I’m gonna make a vet appointment and I kinda hope it’s something medically wrong that he can take medication for. I’m thinking the kennel you use would be helpful because it’s more open and that would help with his anxiety. Thank you!

@mmgarcia81, unfortunately we had to put him down. The tumor grew to be the size of a grapefruit before we really knew what was wrong. We had taken him to the vet multiple times before we found out he had a tumor. His quality of life diminished. He couldn’t walk or get up to go potty. It was the worst thing to put him down. My SO had him since he was a pup. And he was about 12 years old. But he had a good life and he was loved so much.

I was also thinking your dog has separation anxiety. That’s why goes potty when no one is with him. Maybe have him sleep with one of your sons to see if that helps during the night. Play videos or music for him when you are gone.

@rayofmysunshine, I’m so sorry to hear about your dog.

That makes a lot of sense . He’s perfectly fine when everyone is up and awake. Thank you

@bodybycheetos, he seen one 6 months ago but it sounds like something else might be going on and needs to go again soon. When I ask my family for advice they just say it’s time to give him up. There’s no way he can stay alone while I start working 8-10 hours a day.

@mmgarcia81 you never know until you try it and give him a chance. My German Shepherd has anxiety and I wasn't able to leave him home alone without him hurting himself or destroying things. I recently moved from a house where he was able to be free in a yard while I was gone to an apartment where he has no option of being out while I'm not home. I got a pet camera where I could see and hear what he was doing and talk to him. Then would leave the house for 10 minutes at a time at first, then 30mins, then a few hours. Now he can stay all day by himself and doesn't have any issues. I'm so glad I gave him a chance to prove to me that he is capable of being home alone, otherwise I would never leave my apartment.

@bodybycheetos, that’s awesome

Thank you for hope. I know I said I’m not a dog person but regardless he’s been in our family for 10 years my heart would be broken if I had to give him up. My intention is to keep him until he dies. Now I don’t think I’d get another one anytime soon after.

Why wild you put him down? Just because his old. I understand is getting difficult to have but his your dog getting rid of him because he’s going to the bathroom inside is so sad. Why don’t you try training him. He goes inside because no one lets him out. Like you said he only goes when you’re not home or sleeping. If you do decide to let him go he would probably go to a shelter. He probably won’t get adopted because his an old dog.

That’s why I think he’d get put down he’s too old and where I live they have too many dogs as is. I’ll definitely look into meds . That makes sense he may not be able to hold it . He used to let us know by barking or coming to us when he needed to go.

The dog needs exercise and to have a medical exam. Dogs can become more anxious as they get older but regular exercise would help with this. He could also be suffering from incontinence and there's medication that can help. But either way he needs to see a vet to rule anything medical out.

If you’re not a dog person why get a dog? Give him away if you can’t deal with it.

Because we’ve had him for 10 years. He grew up with my now 19 and 16 year old. It was a sacrifice I made for my family and up until a year ago it wasn’t an issue until he needed basically a babysitter. He is chipped and I wouldn’t want people to use him as a fight dog.

He was outside a couple hours a day while he was in the cage. He’d go crazy and get out of the cage while we were asleep or gone. I feel like I’m out of options and feel terrible

What breed? 10 years old is pretty old for large dogs. He could have a health issue that is causing him to pee and poop inside.

I didn’t mention the breed because a lot of people dislike them. He’s never been aggressive but I’m not gonna lie I’m not a dog person and anything can always happen and that scares me too.

@mmgarcia81, well. Just know large breeds tend to have health issues earlier than small breeds. You can google the type of breed and see exactly what they are prone to getting and choose the route you need to take from there.

That’s another reason I feel he’s old and he most likely will be put down and I’d have to live with that. My husband and 16 year love him

If you want him to stay in the cage without problems, he needs to be exercised for at least a half hour everyday before he goes in for a majority. Look into getting him a backpack and you can put water bottles on each side, walk for a half hour with him. If you dont exercise him he will continue to be rowdy
