@boymom_, you need to listen to your man! He is right, you need to tip. Never tipping is tacky. Always tip, and if the service wasn’t great, leave a smaller tip (10-15% instead of 20%).

If people can’t afford to tip, they can’t afford to eat out 🤷🏻‍♀️ sounds harsh but it’s exhausting to run all night long for less than minimum wage. People don’t understand unless they’ve been a tipped employee...

@boymom_, as a server we are told that that’s the basis of what our job requires us. We do all the extras for our tips. I’ve been a server for 10+ years. And I’ve been a trainer for 6 years.

It’s totally normal (and I’ve had people mention at the start) to let your server (waitress is no longer a used term.) that you’re not a ripper. We will serve you, obviously, but we won’t go over the top like we usually would to insure our tip.

The fact that you’re afraid to tell your sever at the very beginning of the meal that you’re a non-tipper pretty much says that you obviously know that’s wrong.

Either you want amazing service, or you don’t. That’s that.

A server serves the guests because that’s what they chose to do for work: but all the extra special treatment is to insure a tip.

Ive had one guest complaint in 5 years and it was because she was super sure I ate some of her chicken burrito before boxing it up for her. (I’ve been vegetarian for yearsss. Definitely didn’t eat any of her chicken burrito, lol.)

Im a wonderful server, and if my manager really thought otherwise, I wouldn’t be a star server and I wouldn’t be a trainer, and I wouldn’t be the one to make schedules.

It’s okay though, when managers deal with speaking to guests like you they just turn their heads and laugh it off. The only one making themselves look silly are the guests like you. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’d HIGHLY recommend not going to the same restaurant time after time though.. I can guarantee those poor servers see you coming and rock-paper-scissors their way into avoid serving you. They probably all remember you and warn eachother how cheap you are. ❤️ Have a good night, honey.

@jennatess, a jobs a job honey, a waitress waits on customers because that’s what they chose to do for work, that’s all I expect & that’s what they’re paid to do. If I had someone treat me like it sounds you would if I tell you I’m not going to tip you I’m sure talking to your manager about it wouldn’t look too good on you & I wonder how long your manager would keep you around. It’s a bad rep for the restaurant as a whole not just yourself. A lot of people use yelp these days. I’m not trying to sit here and argue with you, it is what it is & I could care less, I just stated my opinion on a public post. you can delete my stuff or talk to yourself some more If it floats your boat, i have nothin left to say 😉

@boymom_, bottom line is, if you’re so proud to be a non-tipper then tell your server as SOON AS YOU’RE SEATED. Let them know your table is one that won’t need special treatment and you’d like your order placed, and your food and bill dropped on the table all at the same time.

Don’t make us do extra work for something you’re not going to pay for.

Not everyone tips, I’m proud to be one of them.. people I know don’t complain about this issue, they’re thankful if they get tips, you don’t get a tip then Clearly someones not doing something right. Ill tip if your great and I can’t even afford it. And most importantly these people don’t rely on their tips they rely on the hourly wage they were promised at the date of hire.

It’s all about the experience and quality of time spent.

But, for those who never tip no matter what (which is shocking to see written..) they just need to be up front with their server from the start and tell them they won’t be needing anything more than the basic service. This way the server isn’t wasting time and energy on a guest who just doesn’t deserve it.

I worked at black angus Steakhouse. I almost always got 20% tips. You go out to eat to have people cook for you and serve you. And obviously the great food. Server wage is 7.25/hr and full time isn’t too common. Servers depend on their tips. If everyone had the mindset of I’ll just quit because people dont tip then no one would be able to go out to eat. It’s hard work have to run several tables at a time. And every table feels like they come first. I always made sure my tables were taken care of but a 6 top with a $200+ bill getting tipped $15 because they’re all stingy old people is ridiculous. Especially the picky ones asking you to get them something every 2 seconds. I don’t think tips are just given they are earned though. I worked my ass of to make sure people leave happy and full. Some people are just stingy.

@mrssanderson, sounds like what you’re describing is an overworked, understaffed waitstaff. I didn’t say I automatically deduct tip for one offense but if it’s obvious that the reason food is cold, orders take too long to be taken, etc is because the server is talking to coworkers, on their phone, just lazy.. then yes I will tip how I see fit. Which usually isn’t much. And yes I have served before.

@jennatess, i read all your comments and I get where your coming from, I just know if I was in your shoes I would see it differently is all. I would t be waiting on tips or expecting anything mostly because we know how most people are these days and like myself don’t typically tip or they’re cheap so I would only depend on my hourly wage that I know I would be earning. My work I cater to people in they’re worst times in need and I’m only tipped maybe every 20jobsites we go to, tho we don’t ask or require tips for what we do the tips are appreciated. I love tipping when the person actually genuinely looks like they enjoy their job and really wanting us to enjoy their service, it’s almost never the case

@boymom_, you don’t need to tip if you’re okay with the server taking your order, dropping off the food and then the bill.

Tipping is for all the extras. For the service we provide you. It’s for the extra refills, the extra sides of ranch, it’s for making sure your food is correctly made in the kitchen, it’s for making sure your kids are fed first and happy, it’s for making sure you’re table is cleared after each plate is finished. “Pre-bussing” isn’t mandatory. We could leave every plate empty and dirty on the table until you leave if we want. It’s for boxing up your food to-go, among about 15-20 other things we do to make sure you had a good time. If you don’t want to tip, that fine. But, make sure to tell your server first so they don’t give you extra treatment for something you’re not going to pay for. Make sure to tell them first so they can just dropped everything at once and go focus their time on other guests that DO tip for the experience.

And if you read my first comment, you’ll see that at the end of every shift, each server has to tip out of their tips they received to the food runner, busser, and bartender.

So, If you leave $0.00 the server is literally paying their help out of their own pocket. We literally just LOST money because of the non tippers .

Saying “find another job” isn’t really the smart thing for us to do. People like you who don’t tip are few and far between. You’re a small percentage. Why would we leave a job that is wonderful for a parent, and easy to make a living off of only 4 or 5 days of work because only a few people are shitty? Ya know?

We remember the ones who leave less than 10%. We all talk and when we see those people return the host will either give you to the worst server on the floor, or the most inexperienced server and we all warn eachother, “who has table 22?? They didn’t tip me last time even though I gave them great service! Heads up!” so this way we know not to treat you with 20% style service and just give you the bare minimum. Why work extra hard for something we won’t receive?

@abcd1131, this is what I tell my man all the time when we discuss leaving a tip, which I never do unless someone really surprises me. He says people depend on their tips and I say if this was my job I would be relying on my hourly wage I agreed and took the job for, I wouldn’t be relying on any tips for one penny. Wether deserved or not I would be happy with $5 if that’s what I got then clearly that’s what my service is just worth or that’s all they can afford, better then nothing 🤷🏼‍♀️ i go to take my family out, tipping never crosses my mind.

Right?! The worst! It happens SO often at my store. I really think people believe that we take the order, go to the back and verbally tell the line cooks or prepare it ourselves 🤦🏻‍♀️ we’re not a one person show people...

@mrssanderson, omg nothing pisses me off worse than going to a table and being like “how is everything tasting?” And they respond with “well..we are still waiting on _____.” And the food runner or another server freaking bumped it and didn’t run it! UGH! Then of course the guest is thinking I fucked up. That I didn’t ring it in, or something. When, in reality I did everything correct, but one other human being messed up means my tip is now affected.. 🤦🏼‍♀️

@cams, Have you served before? Just curious lol. Most nights, I get stuck with large parties and still get sat with multiple other tables. Night shifts on weekends are like a constant struggle just to stay on top of everything that my guests need. Then we also have to do our own side work, roll silverware, put away glassware, clean throughout our shift, and help run food. If we didn’t have other people to help run food, everyone’s food would be cold. Usually there’s a manager or someone in charge of the expo window and things are pulled as they’re sold off by the kitchen, meaning the order is ready. If you’ve never walked into a kitchen and seen a screen completely black with sold off food, yours being multiple scrolls over... you wouldn’t understand the anxiety you get as you’re helping a coworker take their food out or being dragged to a table to sing happy birthday for the billionth time in a night while hoping that your order gets pulled correctly. If you’ve never served then you’ve also never experienced the frustration of orders behind yours being pulled first, things being bumped off and not ran, new staff taking things to the wrong table, or trying to find a manager to take care of a comp while you just got triple sat and table 30 is shaking their glass for their fifth refill in the last 20 minutes. Not saying it’s never the servers fault. But we’re also human beings. Misunderstandings and mistakes happen and generally if your food is cold or you’re unhappy than your server either has the meal removed from your bill or replaced. Just try to keep in mind that you’re not the only person your server is taking care of. Be patient, be kind... and tip 20% or go grab some fast food 😊

It’s definitely the area. No one ever wants to tip in Reno NV. When I was a busser/ server I almost NEVER got tipped.

@mrssanderson, I didn’t say the wait time on my food. The wait time to take my order for drinks and then food. There shouldn’t be a giant lapse in time. AND yes it can be the servers fault. If my food is not hot, that means the server isn’t paying attention and let it sit there longer than it should have.

I usually do 20% unless the service is terrible. Then I’ll do 15 or even 10. For example if I have to sit there waiting for over ten min to give my drink order, longer for my food order and you don’t check on me during the meal to ask if something else is needed/drink refilled etc... you’re getting peanuts as a tip.

I'm sorry I always tip 20% because I struggled when I was a single mom with a son and tip were the only way I ate or got to take public transit if no rips I would walk 2 miles to get to work so I never tip badly after all that

And I’m not a doctor or lawyer, and you can bet your ass my husband & I always tip 20%.

But we go to places like Logan’s Roadhouse, Applebee’s, etc. that are mid-price. We don’t go to fine dining places, because that’s really not in our budget.

@leowifey, amen to that! If you never tip, you should be going to fast food restaurants where it is not expected. If you can’t afford a decent tip, then you can’t afford to eat at that kind of restaurant. It’s just not fair to the waitstaff.

@jennatess sorry momma, I feel ya! I actually insist on being the one to leave a tip if we eat out with my inlaws because they are soooooo stingy. Its embarrassing for me and it sucks for the waitstaff who work their asses off. If they do insist on leaving the tip also, I sneak several extra bucks in the table before we leave bc I know it'll suck. Lol

Agreed that if you can't afford to tip for good service, you can't afford the service - especially in an industry where you know the servers work for tips!

Remember me warning you about the people/clientele in Florida being garbage!! Haha! 😂 It’s definitely all based on location. When I worked in Illinois the average tip was 17%. In Sacramento CA, it was 20-22%. I miss those days. Here in Reno, Nevada it’s 15% average. 🙄. But, I don’t want to get lazy and start giving just mediocre service because I’d feel so bad if I did and guests tipped 20% or over! Lol. I’ll just keep serving the best I can and hope for a change in clientele for the holidays. 🤞🏼😂

I completely agree! Tonight was a decent night but my experience in south Florida so far has been SO discouraging. I’m so thankful for our 18% gratuity added to any party over 8 because our clientele is trash. It blows my mind how many people feel tipping isn’t required but will drink $60+ worth of top shelf liquor and waste my time asking for everything under the sun.

@mrssanderson, so so so true. In reality, if you’re down to your last $100.00, is eating out really what you should be doing? Can’t afford the $20.00 tip on top of that $100 bill? Then (A) think again, and go somewhere less expensive. (B) tell the server as soon as your sit down that you don’t plan on tipping and be okay with getting your bill and the food at the same time.

It’s really not hard. Even when I was 15/16 years old going out to eat, I understood that you’re tipping for the service, not for the meal.

I work in fine dining though. The average bill for two is $100-$200. Like tonight I had a table of 5 and their bill was $420.00. I have to do things like fold napkins at the table when a guest gets up to use the restroom, and completely wipe any crumbs off in between courses. It’s a lot of work when you have 5-7 tables but it (typically) great money.

I never tip bkz I always tend to get shitty service !! They never come to refill my drink or ask if I need anything I always have to call over a random server and ask them wat I need and I never been to a restaurant where they box my food .. must be nice lol they always jst give me a box and make me pack it myself !

And if you read my comment above, it’s FEW and far between when it comes to crappy tippers. We remember them forever and give them bare minimum service the next time, but I’m not about to quit my job over a few horrible people.

It’s a great job for a mom. I can write my own schedule and cover shifts as easily as 10 mins prior to start time. I’m “signing up” for the flexibility and the 90% of guests who tip appropriately. Tipping isn’t mandatory, but, our job is to take the order, drop the food, and drop the bill & take payment. THATS IT. What you’re tipping for is the experience. (And the reason I’m angry tonight.) My making sure your drinks are always filled, your appetizer, salads, soups, entrees and desserts are all spaced perfectly (instead of them coming out at random times or all at once.) making sure I’ve pre-bussed your table, and making sure you have all the ranch or sauces you need. You’re tipping to make sure ive kept your table clean between each course. You’re tipping so I box up your food so when you get home and you open your box of leftovers they look nicely put together inside of that box Instead of dumped in.

It’s FINE if you don’t want to tip appropriately, but at least let your server know ahead of time so they can just do the bare minimum instead of going above and beyond for nothing.

You’re tipping is based on the service you’ve experienced.

Just like you wouldn’t get your hair cut without tipping, or a message without tipping. Enjoyed the experience? 15-22%. Horrible experience? Don’t tip!

I like to try and spread awareness on the way stupid restaurants force their staff to tip out on sales/tips they didn’t make.

But, that’s the job. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Many people say, “don’t like it, get a new job”. Which, makes sense but it’s nice for parents. I only work 4 days a week, I’m able to call in or get my shift covered last minute if I have a sick child, and like I said, the bad tippers are definitely not every single day.

Sorry girl! I totally feel this! I always tip, more so when I see a person with a good personality and is obviously trying hard to do their job and pleasing a customer!! I dont know your job but I have several girlfriends that are waitresses and know that they make their money in tips only!! Hopefully tomorrow will be better for ya! 💗

@godspromises2018, I’ve been serving for 10 over years, across the country, and I can easily say it’s this area that is extra cheap.

And not everyone has to go somewhere where an average dinner for two is $130+.

Here is the thing MANY people don’t understand: at the end of the day, let’s say I sold $1,000 in sales. I give 2.2% of $1,000 to the food runners/bussers and I have to also give 1.1% to my bartender. Nearly every restaurant is like this. So, if a table has a $100.00 check and they leave me $10.00. Out of that $10.00 tip I have to give $2.20 to the busser and $1.10 to the bar. So, Ive now just waisted an hour (give or take) for $6.70.

It’s only few and far between typically that tip less than 20%. (And BELIEVE me we as servers & bartenders remember their faces and don’t give as wonderful service to them next time.🤷🏼‍♀️), but it’s insane when it does happen.

Chili’s and Applebee’s has deals for 2 for $20 or 2 for $50.00. A $10.00 tip on those bills are fine. But, if someone has the money to spend $100.00-$250.00 on one meal, then they better be able to afford to tip appropriately.

I’ve been doing this for 10+ years. Like I said, it’s only a few people that are the cheap ones, and I’ll remember them all for next time. Saying that only Lawyers or Doctors are the only ones who tip concerns me that you genuinely believe that. I would say probably 1 out of every 70 to 100 tables don’t tip. So, those people are very few and far between and when it does happen all the servers are informed by the server that waited on that particular table to watch out for them next time and avoid serving them. Nobody wants to waste time, nor do they want to have to tip out the bussers & bartender on a table that didn’t tip anything. Next time they can only have a few refills on MY watch instead of me rushing to refill their drinks 7+ times, and they can box their own food, and if they don’t care for their dish then “welp, they know for next time not to order it.” instead of me going out of my way to comp their dish and order and rush them something new. Among a thousand other things I do to provide 20% + service.
