Ladies, so my friend mentioned something about my son..she said and I quote.. " is it weird he flaps his hands? Do you think hes might be autistic" So now I have that bug on my shoulder that wont let me be.. hes stubborn and only answers to his name when he wants too, but he plays with his sister..makes eye contact,smiles, laughs, and dances and loves to cuddle. He is taking physical and speech therapy because he was delayed on his motor skills and speech. Should I bring it up to the pediatrician?? How old do children get tested for autism.. ps: his hand flapping isnt repetitive, nor he does it all the time.. usually when hes excited, walking, or gets scared when someone speaks loudly. Should I be concern??any advice is as appreciated

My friends little boy is being assessed for autism due to his hand flapping.. Definitely worth mentioning if you can get an appointment x

Both my babies have their 2 year and 1 year appointment on Friday. I will mention it.

My son does the same exact thing and is a bit behind on his talking all he will really say is mama and dad and his doctor said he should be saying about 6 words by now but she also just told us to start sitting down with him more and repeating about the same 4 words over and over until he starts getting the hang of it if that makes sense like red & blue or cat and dog.. I was worried to but someone once told me that when their walking someone else’s kid is talking and so on and so forth.. and luckily my son was trying to say dog the other day.. but the hand flapping might just be normal cause my son will start flapping away as if he is trying to fly

@garay88, yeah I know it’s usually by 2 or even 3 their more worried about it and will actually start looking more into it cause i was just reading about some early signs and like you said it does sound like a lot of stuff babies do as their getting bigger like my son does it when he gets excited cause he’ll think I’m going to tickle him or if he gets into something and I walk over to get him he’ll do it .

My son used to flap his hands when he was a baby and even when he started walking sometimes. I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

It’s a sensory thing. It doesn’t always mean autism, in most cases it doesn’t.
