Heads up, this is a rant.

Apparently it's a huge shocker that I am not going to protect my kid from all germs. I believe it isn't bad, but actually healthy for a child to be around germs. Now I'm not saying that I'm going to take my child to a sick person and let them cough and sneeze in her face but I am not going to constantly disinfect everything. I'm not going to constantly hand sanitize. I won't freak out when my kid eats dirt or tries dog food. Kids eat dirt, it won't kill them. I'm not going to lose it when her pacifier falls out of her mouth and she picks it up and puts it back in. My child isn't going to have a mother who obsesses over every little germ touching her. Guess what? You can be a germaphobe and keep the house all disinfected and germ free but the second that kid steps outside they are exposed to every germ in the air and on the ground. Everything they touch will have germs from someone or something else. Their body isn't going to know what to do with those germs and they are going to be excessively vulnerable to them, they are more likely to get sick, to develop health issues. No one in my family is crazy about germs and we are hardly ever sick, we are all healthy as can be. I have a 6 year old brother who has never had more than a head cold. I haven't been sick in years. I have almost 30 cousins and they are the same way. There is no point in hiding and shielding a child from germs when it's inevitable that they will be around them in the real world and their body won't know how to fight them and won't be used to them.

To each their own of course and there are special circumstances with health issues that someone is born with etc. but it's ridiculous to come at me saying I'm setting my family up and failing because germs don't bother us.

Rant over.

You’re absolutely right! The first few weeks are extra sensitive, but after that, especially after 3 months exposure is good in most cases. It’s common to become a bit of a germaphobe the first few weeks though, because if baby basically gets anything, they are going to be hospitalized, which no one wants!

Sorry if someone freaked out on you!!!!

@amysbabies Of course as a newborn you don't want them around most things and most likely will be very nit picky about them, don't want a baby in the hospital, ever, especially right after they leave.

It was on another app, I made a comment and like 4 people blew up lol

You are absolutely correct! I have tried telling this to my work colleague. Her son is a few weeks older than my youngest and she is such a germaphobe. She didn't take her son out of the house until he was over 2 months. She would only take him to the drs and then straight back home. I told her that she needs to take her baby outside some. She looked at me like I was crazy. She flat out told me that both of my kids were going to get very sick if I didn't pay more attention and worry about germs. I don't take my children around sick people but they do need to be exposed to the outside world. That is what helps build their immune system.

@thegermanmommy 2 months is a ridiculously long time to just have him in the house. Wow! Exactly, they don't need to be around sick people but they need their immune systems built up so they won't get very sick.

@monavidaaxo Yes! I love the "knock on wood". It's proven and has evidence that it is best for them. It's definitely understandable that we all worry and don't want them sick but overprotection isn't going to be able to protect them for very long, if at all.

We currently have a norovirus outbreak in our area, so I'm keeping our family as germ free as possible until this thing passes. I do not want that bug in our home! 😷

I agree with you somewhat. I’m all for playing in the mud and eating grass, but people germs are different. I didn’t let a lot of people hold or touch her when she was tiny because a newborn immune system just isn’t as strong as a 3 or 4 month olds. But now she’s 10 months old and I’m pretty laid back.

@mommytok I agree with as a newborn, I meant when they were a little older. That's why I used the examples of her doing things beyond newborn stage etc. A newborn is very vulnerable.
