My little girl was hospitalized her first week- luckily we got to stay with her, but we HAD to supplement. I would nurse for a certain amount of time and then top her off with a bottle. Or just a bottle while I tried to pump. She never had an issue going back and forth, even when we got her off formula, she would still take breastmilk in a bottle. I’m not sure how to do it if you don’t *have to* right away. I guess I’ll figure it out this time. I’ll probably start after a week if he is healthy, one pumped bottle a day.
I nurse at night and mornings and try to bottle feed during the day or when my husband helps out or when we are out. We’ve been rotating since birth. No nipple confusion but he has went on a nursing strike because my letdown was too fast compared to the slow flow bottle. We use tommie tippee.
@pumpernickel, how old was he when you started rotating? I wasn’t able to feed my other too because I never produced. I’m lactating like crazy with this one and feel confident but I want to go between both.
My son was in the nicu so he was bottle fed from the beginning. After a few days we were able to start breastfeeding and we just continued to rotate between the two, depending on what was convenient in the moment. I breastfed for 23 months with no issues 😊
We started doing it at about 6 weeks and we did bottles during night time feedings and breast during the day and it worked out really well! Just pumped every time he woke up at night to keep my supply up for him
I suggest breast only for the first few weeks, to establish a good supply. Also if you introduce the bottle too early, baby may prefer bottle over breast. My last baby had his first bottle of breast milk at 6 weeks old and he did great!
