Okay so we have a side yard and porch with stray cats that hang around and we feed but one of them had kittens and she’s not taking care of them properly because she’s only a year old. We’re thinking about taking them in, anyone know anything about kittens this young? I’ve just never dealt with cats before their eyes were even open and wonder if there’s extra caution I should I be taking? Thanks in advance for help 🤗💛

@tinyhumansbitch, the mother is rather skittish but we’ll try that for sure. Thank you for the info ☺️

There is kitten formula and you can give it with a syringe every few hours. Maybe find a box, put a towel in there and see if the mom will go in and be with the kittens.

@anchetakionafe, yes she’s awesome with kittens. She took some in not too long ago. I’ve raised plenty of kittens but never had to take them from their mamas. I do know you will need some warm bedding for them, some kitten milk, and a syringe or kitten bottle.

@anchetakionafe, you’re welcome, I would take a warm rag and clean all the gunk from around their faces as well

@anchetakionafe, you’re welcome. I’ve taken care of many kitten litters so I know a good bit about them lol if I was allowed to have more animals than my one cat I would probably foster kittens

@anchetakionafe, I do too lol I’ve had kitten fever for sometime now but I’m not even suppose to have the cat I’ve got now but he chose us, jumped in my fiancé’s car at a store last year and when my fiancé tried to put him out the car he just jumped back in so he brought him home.

I would only take them in if moms fully abandoned them. Hygiene wise, they can get bladder infections and momma cats tongue prevents that. Something in her spit ^^’ gross I know lol
If they are abandoned and you choose to take them in here’s some info on kitten care
•Get a tub or box with soft blankets and make sure where ever you keep them doesn’t have a cold draft, or place a blanket over the bin.
•Formula feed them either KMR or GMC kitten formula every 2-3 hours/ best with syringe with nipple on the end so you can see how much they are each drinking to prevent de hydration
•They can’t potty on their own so you have to get a damp cloth or paper towel and rub their parts softly so they will potty
I have raised the kitten I have now since she was 2 days old, she’s finally 3 Weeks old now.

@colorfuldreams, thank you so much!! We’re pretty sure she abandoned them today, she hasn’t been here all day and they were crying earlier for a long time. We’re gonna go to the pet store now and get stuff to feed them!

@anchetakionafe, Your very welcome.
The only thing you have to watch for it having the syringe or bottle tilted right so they are not drinking air and also that they don’t get milk to fast or they will aspirate it out their nose

@anchetakionafe, This is what my formula looks like, once you open it you have to put it in fridge. It has measurements for how much water and powder to put on it too.
NEVER re heat the formula and whatever they don’t drink from what you made, dump out.
They can get bacteria infections easy.

And I find they latch onto longer nips easier when first learning to be fed by people. You may have to put the tip in it’s mouth and squirt a little in its mouth so kitten knows what it is and will latch

A lot of times if the mother is neglecting one or two she knows it’s not going to make it. Fostered a cat where the mother was younger. Everyday I’d come in the room I had for her and one wasn’t getting attention. I tried to feed, stimulate to defecate and urinate, and keep warm. Whole litter died except one (two right in my hands while feeding.) They are vulnerable up to 12 weeks. Think it’s called fading kitten syndrome.

@ataraxia, 💔 The liter I took in, they all died except one as well.
I’ve fostered for a long time and taken care of newborn kittens many times and it’s been a very long time since this has happen :,(
I cried.
Thankfully I got the last one antibiotics in time for them to work fast enough.
They were all eating fine and showed no signs then all a sudden they were just passing in their sleep.

@colorfuldreams, it’s so heartbreaking! I think the litter I fostered were premies it was horrible. I had to even cut their cords because she wouldn’t chew them off. She eventually found her nurturing instinct but it was too late, my husband thinks she knew they weren’t going to make it.

@ataraxia, Yea that’s common, if they neglect them... usually it’s because they sense they were born with some defect or that they were not going to make it.
