When they ask or definitely by the time they turn 12. My 10 year old knows that the sperm meets the egg and a baby grows in the uterus fed by the placenta. He also knows the two ways that babies exit the body. The only thing we haven't discussed with him is the specifics of intercourse. We plan to talk to him about it before this summer is over. But it will be an ongoing discussion as he grows and starts to go through puberty.

@yayacarrington wow thanks alot i do need to talk to her more about it... but i guess the reason i freaked out is cuz i want her to keep her innocence for as long as possible and like dont rush to have sex or anything

@cmjohnson3047 I completely understand. It feels like a loss of innocence to me, too. I homeschool my boys so I think they are a little bit more insulated. But I don't want them to be naive or to get the wrong info from another source. It's better if they hear it from us and know that we can talk about it openly whenever they want.

I think any time is good it’s how you explain it that’s key. Children can show interests from all ages but it’s how you simplify it for the younger ones and elaborate for the older kids that’s most important but most of all keep the subject positive and always open for questions and discussions because no matter how bad we dread that day our children WILL become curious and they WILL find out and they WILL experiment so it’s our jobs as parents to be an open book, accurate, informative and comfortable enough with our bodies and sexuality that that passes on to our children as well. These are very important, molding years that can really make a woman who she’s gonna be and build her self confidence or lower her self esteem depending on the route we take as teachers. Thankfully my mom was very open and honest with me and made me see my body as beautiful while explaining how special each and every “change” is and how everyone goes through these changes and they’re not to be hid or embarrassed but embraced. I was taught to love and respect my body and that’s what I’ll teach my kids. They may not follow my path 100% but I’ll atleast know I tried and they were exposed to what I feel is right. Good luck I’m sure everything will work out fine

I began puberty at 11 and that's when my mom sat me down and had a serious talk with me about everything sex and baby related. She didn't hide anything or shelter me from hard truths. She talked to me about my body and how I can be taken advantage of and the good and the bad things about growing up as a woman... She told me her own experiences (not super detailed lol) and I think it's what made me so uninterested in sex for a little while but once I started catching feelings for guys and my mom began to notice a difference in how I flirted or acted with boys, and then got into a pretty serious relationship, I was about 14, and she had another little talk with me about safety and put me on the pill.
