delayed cord clamping
I've looked into delayed cord clamping but not much and wanna know more. What are the benefits of it? Who's done it before and was there a noticeable difference? I'm thinking about doing it with this baby but want to hear more experiences about it.
I wanted to do it last time but my doctor told me that he would flat out refuse to do it because the 3 to 4 minutes that it took for them to cut the cord after delivery was enough to benefit baby and that delaying it longer can cause babies blood to flow back into the placenta and cause health issues. Once he denied my request I didn't even look into it further to see how often that occurs. I think that it's a pretty divided subject. But since that was the only thing that my doctor denied me I didn't make an issue out of it and baby ended up perfectly healthy
It's the best thing for the baby if medically possible! I got to watch my daughter's cord pulse away and then when it stopped, my husband and 7 yr old daughter cut the cord! It gives the most oxygen/nutrients to the baby which can be really good for those that might struggle with breathing. My daughter didn't cry until after that because when they still are attached to the uterus they're getting all the oxygen/nutrients they need! If its not absolutely medically necessary, hold your baby attached to you until the cord stops pulsing :).
The comment about increased jaundice- my oldest had her cord pulled too hard and cut right away and she had terrible jaundice! I also had pieces of placenta still attached in me! My youngest, delayed cord-clamping, birth in water NO jaundice. I guess it's a matter of the bilirubin levels. I know that increase in stress for the baby during labor and birth contributes to higher bilirubin levels (jaundice).
To the person that talked about the increased jaundice risk. I've read some on that also. I don't know all the info but I think I read something that talked about delaying for like 1minute gets the baby a big percentage of extra blood and stem cells without the jaundice risk. It was something like delaying 3minutes had the severely increased risk. I guess because it is too hard in the baby's liver to process all the extra cells maybe? Anyway, it's definitely worth talking to your doctor about. If you were considering banking stem cells or cord blood, you can't do delayed clamping and storage. You have to choose which benefits you prefer.
It's like Emmaof2 said, a lot of the blood that the baby had while in the uterus is still in the placenta/cord when the baby is born. Delaying clamping just means giving that blood a chance to finish going back into the baby and only afterwards cutting the cord. Benefits include increased blood volume, lowered risk of iron deficiency and i think also a higher number of immunity cells. I also read that it can possibly lower the risk of postpartum hemorrhage in the mother. Good stuff :)
I did it with my first birth and am planning to do it again this time. I don't have what to compare it to, but the benefits seem pretty clear to me without real downside, so why not?
I did it with my last baby, and will be doing it again. It's becoming common again as more research comes out with the benefits. Apparently up to 1/3 of the babies blood may be in the cord after birth. It protects the baby against anemia, and gives the baby a boost of stem cells. There's a lot of new research out there you can look into further.
I've wanted to do it with both pregnancies but couldn't with a c-section or with the baby with a heart condition. Hoping to this last time. Honestly I'm so tired so I'm blanking on why it's better. But if I remember correctly, it gets the hemoglobin up and iron stores up. I do believe it's better if you're able to do it, even if you don't believe that, I don't think there are any negatives to doing it.
Anyone else delaying cord clamping ?
delayed cord clamping
Those of you who has had your babies already, did you delay the cord clamping?
Has anyone actually done delayed cord clamping?
Did anyone do Delayed Cord Clamping ?
Really thinking of doing delayed cord clamping :)
I wasn't aware of the jaundice thing. I have 5 kids and None of mine were delayed cord clamping and none had jaundice. Cool info tho
