Struggling to pay for diapers

One in three moms has struggled to pay for diapers, according to a new study. Eight percent say they've tried to make them last longer by leaving a wet diaper on their child. -nbc news

No I have seen other posts about people saying people should call the cops because they didn't think the business owners could refuse something and it was such a tiny thing. That is all.

I'm not disgusted by them.. I never said that. I know what poor is. I've been there growing up and after Dh and I got married.

I said I was disgusted about the lo being in the same diaper ALL day. As I should be.

And I've never seen anything in this group about calling the cops. If your referring to my previous comment. I have talked, or threatened to talk, to the cops many times about situations like this. And I've gotten health codes and laws from the health dept so I can stand up for myself and have the facts. I've had many different places try to force me into buying chemical filled disposable diapers for my daughter because they have a problem with cloth, which is ridiculous.

I was just trying to give a different view in some things those moms were going through and that we shouldn't judge other moms on what they do to raise their kids. We should be talking about what should be done to help struggling families not being disgusted by them.

Also what is with this group and calling the cops about every little thing? If someone called the cops about a laundromat not allowing you to clean cloth diapers they would laugh and ask why you are calling them. It is a business and they can decline your business. Now maybe some cities have bylaws and most likely the cops still wont do anything you would have to contact the city business council who would investigate and maybe fine but more likely just educate the business owner. Sadly it is not a human right to do laundry.

Now I am in Canada so I can just speak about here but any business can decline your business with them EXCEPT the use of a bathroom. They are not allowed to force you to buy anything to use the washroom (though I will if in country and they are on septic systems and wells)

And as far as the laundromat goes, I'd be going to the health dept. And the police and see if they legally can do that. Because it's no different than washing clothes a baby has had a blowout in. they might tell you that you can't, but unless it's posted or in their terms then its not legally not allowed.

There are babies that are badly allergic to sposies.. are you telling me if your child was allergic to disposables you'd put them in them anyway because you can't wash cloth at the laundromat? No, of course not. Any Momma would do the things I said because they'd HAVE to for their child.

A camp style washer (the cheaper option) is a 5 gallon bucket and a plunger. The landlord wouldn't even know it was a washer, and it could be used outside. And the wonder washer is manual, so you could use it outside, so it could be kept in the car. It's literally small enough to set on a counter. If there's a will there's a way.

But regardless, I've been there. Choosing electric or food. Or water or food. That's one reason we decided to use cloth. Anyone can save $1 a week and in 3 months have enough for a few cheap cotton shirts for flats. That would be 12 shirts from a consignment store. 24 flats. And then you'd never have to buy diapers again except for some for overnight - but that's one diaper a day versus 8-12 diapers a day. Then you could use the money you save from not buying disposables for new modern cloth diapers (sunbabys are $5, a few here and there would easy since you wouldn't have disposable diaper expense) and then you'd also have that extra money to go towards groceries or bills.

And when lo is out of diapers you can sell any of the modern ones u got for 50%-75% of what you paid for them.

I'm not trying to be mean. But when you really need to cut an expense you do what ever it takes to make it happen. It may not be ideal, but it'll work.

Нравится Ответить

Well it depends. My landlord doesn't allow any type of washer no matter the size and the laundromat doesnt allow people to wash them there so unless some of these moms have cars or can travel they buy what they can.

When you have to pick between spending extra $7 on a diaper while buying disposables until you get all cloth or food that week you choose food. I believe you that in the long run it is cheaper but getting there is an expense some mothers cannot afford.

I am just putting another view on things and that you shouldn't judge people about the choices they have to make week to week, pay check to pay check.

buy one and show him how easy they are. dh didn't agree at first, but when i showed him modern cloth he was semi-ok with it. then after we switched to cloth and then used disposables a couple times he was always compaining about the paper on her bum and he wished she was in cloth :)

at the beginning i didn't really feel dh had much a of a say tho. im a stay at home mom and do 99% of diaper changes. he maybe changes 1 diaper a day (except on weekends when he's home)

I have fought the cloth diaper battle a few times. Hubby still says no. I even tried to have another daddy at church tell him how easy cloth can be. Yet again I get a no. I have given up hope on this one for now.

Cr2009, this post is about how cheap they can be. Lol. You don't have to buy them all at once. A little here other and slowly switch. Flats and covers are easy to wash in a camp style washer. Or you can also save the money little by little and buy a wonder washer. Even if it takes a year to get all the supplies, you'll still save money.

I'm buying kawaii diapers. 21 diapers each with 2 inserts, plus 12 extra inserts. A wet bag and an on the go wet bag. All for under $200! They are all one size so I won't have to use disposables again! Plus shipping is free since I spent four than $50! Whooooo

Cloth diapers are only good if you have a washer otherwise it is a pain to go to laundromat and some dont allow you to clean them there.

Also you need the money up front to buy cloth diapers and they are not cheap. If you dont have it cant buy them

I just ordered some sunbaby diapers, can you believe you get 12 diapers and 12 inserts for 63!?!? LOVE IT!!!

I've never had a leak in cloth unless it was user error (I put it in wrong or didn't fasten it tight enough)

And if u forget to transfer from washer to dryer all u have to do is run a rinse.

How do u store them? We never have smell while storing them, even if I go 3 days between laundry.

Most of dd's poop shakes right off, bit if it's pasty then I use our diaper sprayer.. It takes just a couple mins.

My son got a HORRIBLE rash 2 weeks ago because he was teething+his first cold and it caused some pretty severe diarrhea. He ended up with blisters all over his bottom, he would even sit down to play or sit in the tub to take a bath cause it hurt so bad:( we had to put him on disposables for those couple of weeks so we could treat it with cream that's not cloth diaper safe.... And omg, his poop would POUR out of the leg holes :( we went to target and poop came out the back and went up to his neck :( so embarrassing. And at night the sposies would only hold up for 4 hours.... Needless to say I was ECSTATIC when the rash was healed and we could get back into our cloth! I don't find it difficult at all to cloth. I actually don't have to buy ANY diapers for my little girl due in December. I can totally re use his diapers for her:) such a money saver! More money to spend on cute girly outfits!

we use cloth to.. i had to use sposies the other day while stripping dipes and they felt like putting a paper towel or small panty liner on him. LOL i love our cloth and its as easy as take diaper off throw in pail... BOOM...done.... then on laundry day toss all in washer and wash..... i have mostly pockets and flour sack towels as flats but use them in my pockets i have prefolds and 2 covers but waiting on some fluff mail.....

dont forget u can get assunta store covers for 4.99 a piece that are double gusseted!

cloth is super addicting!

and saves soooo much money.

Annie, if you have any questions feel free to pm me :) the research can be overwhelming at first since there are so many different options.

I told one daycare if she wanted to pay for my honest company diapers then she could and we would use sposies.

Because I wasn't putting chemicals on dd but I wasn't forking out the small fortune to buy her chemical free sposies.

She looked at me like I was crazy, then I told her if she wouldn't pay for my diapers then she would need to let me have free childcare so I could afford said diapers.

She told me that wasn't an option and I told her that was fine but I was going to go to the health dept and the police to sort the matter out. Needless to say, while I was there she double checked and told me "well I must have been wrong, sure we can allow cloth"

Always take one to show. A stuffed pocket diaper or an all in one and show them how easy it is. Most people instantly think of flats, pins, and plastic pants. And cloth is a lot more modern now.

Legally they can't. You can go to the cops.

I've been round and round with the daycares here (when I was gonna go back to work)

Unless state law says no cloth diapers. They can't force you to put dangerous chemicals onto your child if you don't want to. Like I said there are children who are allergic to disposables.. what are they gonna do? Make them suffer from horrible rash, swelling, and possibly death from an allergic reaction. Dd gets horrible rash everytime we put her in disposables.

Нравится Ответить

It may not be illegal, but daycares reserve the right to refuse. And many do.

I watched the YouTube videos and I couldn't believe how many different options there are. It looks like I have some research to do.

Great post! We are also a cloth diapering family and absolutely love it! Diaper laundry is enjoyable for me as well. we have used sposies while traveling and cannot wait to get back home to get dd in her cloth. And everytime I have noticed a rash starting up but goes away once she is back in cloth.

Oh and for short trips or even day outings, you can use liners that you place on top of diaper. So if baby poops, you can flush liner and you won't have to carry around poop in the wet bag.

It's state by state. But almost all states have it.

All you have to do is show them and ask them. If they say no, you can get a Dr note saying that disposables irritate you lo and that you need cloth to keep the rash away.

What state are you in?

Нравится Ответить

is this a national or state law? not a single daycare I looked at does cloth

@Annie It depends on the system you use. With flats, prefolds, and fitteds you reuse the cover. With pockets & AIOs you don't.

Pp, It's is illegal for a daycare provider to refuse to use cloth. Some children are allergic to disposables and have no choice but to use cloth.

Нравится Ответить

Do you need to change the cover after every change?

Нравится Ответить

If you have a front load he washer then the wash cycle is a lot more difficult... I just have up at 9 months. My front load doesn't wash them good enough and my daughter would get burns from ammonia with cloth. I tried so hard to make them work., also harder to do if you live in an appt where you can't sun the diapers

Нравится Ответить

while I completely agree about cloth diapers, some daycare facilities will not do cloth diapers. for those moms working multiple jobs to make ends meet and can not find a daycare willing to do cloth, disposable diaper costs are a real issue.

And as far as I can tell there haven't been any cons to cloth.. It took about a week of research to find a good nighttime solution for 12+ hours (a fitted and a flip cover).

And if your lo gets a yeast rash you have to treat the cloth with GSE (buy off amazon.com) in the rinse cycle of the wash.

But that's it, and those are both super easy fixes :)

I commented the washing instructions :)

There are sized diaper (small, medium, large) and one size (0adjust to fit from 10-35lbs)

Check out cloth diapering 101 on YouTube - it's like 7 videos but very helpful.

And dirtydiaperlaundry.com has A TON of reviews on just about every diaper out there.

And, of course, the cloth diaper forum on here :)

Sunbabydiapers.com has affordable ones size pocket diapers (12 for $60)

And greenbeesdiapers.com does to (11 for $80)

Нравится Ответить

Do you just wash it like normal clothes?

Do you have to buy different sizes as your LO gets older?

Нравится Ответить

That was my thought when I read the article about it! We love cloth diapering and started when Clay was about 5 months old. I still occasionally use disposables if I don't have enough dry and can't wait until I have enough diapers that it isn't a problem. Washing has never been a problem for us either and I hate doing laundry, but love diaper laundry for some reason!

This sounds so nice. On my wallet especially. Lol. I just have to do some convincing to my husband. But I may research it more to see if this is something I want to do.

Are there any cons on cloth diapers?

Plus they don't stink near as bad as sposies. I hated taking out the diaper trash when dd was in newborn sposies. It was more of a pain to do that than it is to wash cloth

Cleaning is easy. I use Rockin' Green Soft Rock (it's a cloth diaper detergent for really sensitive skin and soft water), but you can use tide free & clear, ecos free & clear, all free & clear, etc.

If the baby is breastfed you don't have to rinse the poo, it's water soluble. Otherwise, dump poo into toilet and store in a dry pail.

Steps to wash:

1. Cold rinse - no detergent

2. Hot/Cold wash with free and clear detergent

3. Extra cold rinse

4. Hang to dry or dry on Low heat (you can do medium heat to)

That's it. It's super easy. I was intimidated by the laundry aspect of it at first, but it's really no different from doing other laundry.

Нравится Ответить

They're really not a pain to clean at all. I find taking out his diaper genie garbage to be more of a pain lol. Once you establish a washing routine it's easy peasy :)

I have honestly never been I interested in cloth diapers because it seems like a pain to clean. But I'm about to have another little one running around so I would consider using it. Especially with the way the economy is going
