The tabs are meant to come together and even to overlap. You can also have her add an overlap strip to the right of the star so you can pull the left tab even tighter.

I think their sizing is a little off tho.. their small says 9-20lbs. I don't think it would have fit at 9lbs considering she's over 12 and the tabs are touching.
