I think I have to agree with this. If only people stopped to consider the load someone else may be carrying... perhaps there would be more compassion in the world.
This reminds me of a video we were shown at work regarding empathy for others, made by Cleveland Clinic I think.

The human capacity to overcome hardship, cruelty, and pain is amazing. I've been in rehabilitation for 15 years working with the elderly. I can't tell you the sweet, kind, funny older folks who look like anyone's grandparent, but as you get to know them you find out what they had endured. Complete poverty, Nazi camps, having their fellow soldiers beg to be put out of their misery....and they somehow walk away still sane and kind. I had a dear friend who survived terrible abuse in a Nazi camp, lost her entire family, but would tell me in her thick accent, "Sweetheart, people are beautiful. There are always good people if you look for them. Even in the camps, some of them were kind people." I am so honored to get to work with them.
@jenx, thank you for sharing! The Greatest Generation (WWII) certainly have so many stories like this. Unbearable, and yet they still went on. I strive to be more like that, seeing the good despite everything.

@scruffy.nerf.herder they really are such an overlooked group of people! Young people think they are annoying because they are hard of hearing or that they don't understand our modern problems, but they do. They are such tough, good people. I've met some really fun ones too! Like one who was a contortionist in a traveling carnival and had pictures to prove it. Such a babe and so daring for her time! Love my oldsters! :)
@jenx, my grandpa, who has been gone 7 years now, had such a passion for learning, even in his twilight years. He would always take us to museums as kids, and he instilled that curiosity and love of learning in me. He and my grandmother grew up with horse drawn buggies, lived through the Great Depression, and were both college graduates (quite the achievement for late 30's/early 40's!) The things they saw in their lifetime! Whenever I encounter a senior, I try to keep in mind the amazing journeys they have had and what wisdom they can share with us!
