pediatrician and breast milk

pediatrician and breast milk

Jeremiah just had a pediatrician appt. He's 7 months today. He's 18 lbs 10 oz and 25 inches long. She says he's short for his age and below average on weight but he's still following his curve so she's not concerned.

@mrs I'm with you there! My son is 5 months old as of yesterday and is 19lbs, 26 inches!

OP, as long as your baby is healthy, it's fine. If you do choose to introduce baby food, just offer breast milk first, like other moms have said. Sounds like baby is just following their own curve!

For me your baby sounds small but then my son was 9lb 9oz and 23" at birth. Saying that, as long as he's following his curve you're fine. It doesn't sound like your doctor is concerned just giving advice. I agree with the pps not to reduce the milk but offer solids more frequently.

My ds is 2 and only weighs 28lbs. He was under 20 until he was 13mo. Some kids are just smaller and yes food before 1 is just for fun. You can introduce more solids if you want but as long as he's gaining, even a little bit, and producing enough wet and dirty diapers then he's ok.

I'd say he's at a good size for his age. My lo is 17lbs at 13months.

I feel like they say this to bf mom's more often than not. My daughter's always been on the small side and they wanted to tell me I had to supplement formula so I found a a new peds.

I don't think that sounds small. My son was around 13lbs at 7 months.

Also breastmilk should still be his main source of food.

Food before one is JUST for fun.

Your pediatricians sounds uninformed. ?

Ps I just went back and read that you and your husband are short then it's more then likely genetics and nothing to do with your baby's growth or development.

He's fine!!!!

Don't cut out breast milk?

Every baby is different and your baby's healthy that's all that matters ??

And lots of baby's who are at the top of there weight class can't crawl... I know of two ones 9 months and the others 8 1/2

My nephew was 1 yr old and just stared walking he skipped crawling all together.

Each baby learns and grows at their own pace, it's not wrong or right... I don't see why we try to cookie cut a baby?? Each child in school learns and processes information differently.. Is that bad??

Your baby sounds like he's pretty great he's sitting up on his own that young ?✨ you should be so proud of him.

As long as he's happy and healthy which it sounds like he is, then you just keep doing what your doing mama and your baby's wonderful ?

Lots of tummy time helps with crawling.

Don't increase solids breast milk is more important.

And as for teeth again each baby is different, some baby's are born with a full set of teeth my cousin was one of them.

My other nephew was 8 months old when he got his first tooth and he was a early crawler I think he was 5 months when he started crawling.

I wish my ds didn't have teeth yet. ? biting sucks lol.

He's ten months old and he just stopped biting but it was painful for a bit there lol

I don't think there's anything wrong with your son.

He's reaching his milestones except crawling your coming up aces.

Don't worry as long as he's healthy there's nothing to worry about.

Keep nursing an feeding him. Like you have been.

Yes me and my so are both on the shorter side. I guess it is possible I misunderstood but what she said was' give him more solids so he's not so dependent on breast milk'. I took that as he should be getting more solids and less breast milk.

It's not too early since most pedis agree that solids at 6+ months is okay but you shouldn't cut out breastmilk for solids. Breastmilk should still be his main source of nutrition until 1.

As long as he's still gaining weight, I wouldn't worry.

@alm- many of us "baby bumpers" have helped out tons of moms looking for help. You'd be shocked at how many times doctors have given misinformation or terrible advice and us "internet moms" have helped the mom realize she needs new pediatrician because hers was seriously behind on their current research. Doctors aren't always right.. Gasp! I know right?

And there's nothing wrong with a baby having breastmilk as his only source of calories.

He seems healthy to me. My youngest was 18lb 14oz & a little over 26ins at 7 months. He is nice & fat though, rolls everywhere. Are you or your SO short?

As the other pps said, milk first, then you can over solids. Never replace milk with solids.

First BBers do not take place over what your doc says. She is treating your kids, not internet moms

Second you misunderstood what she meant. I'm positive she meant give more solids but not less breastmilk/formula. In other words she didn't mean replace it. She just meant so he's not so dependent on BM for his only source of calories. I think she wants his daily calorie intake up. Hope that makes sense.

Nope. My 9 month old is smaller than that and is primarily on the boob. She maybe eats food once a day at daycare. The rest is just boob juice

Both my boys are small my oldest has always been on the 10th percentile and he was formula fed my youngest is in the 25th some babies are small others are big I don't think it matters how they're fed they do recommend as they get closer to 1 to give more solids but that's totally up to you if he's in the curve I wouldn't worry about it also my son didn't get teeth until he was 9 months he's 13 months now and only has 6 teeth I've actually heard it's better for them to get them late my first already had molars and all his front teeth by that age every baby is different feed him solids 3 times a day and nurse as usual my son didn't nurse any less when he started eating solids

Never ever trade nursing for solids. I think food before one is "mostly" for fun. If baby isn't gaining weight well, then a little purées can be helpful. But you always offer breast first. However if your baby is following his curve, then I think he's just fine. Both of my babies are super healthy but fall below where they "should" be on the percentile for weight. But they both have a great upward curve and they both have little chunky cheeks and thighs! I too as a baby fell below the "ideal" weight. I don't know how I feel about those percentile charts.. Supposedly there's a breastfed chart and formula fed chart and a lot of doctors look at the formula chart for breastfed babies and vice versa..? Maybe check and make sure your doctor is looking at the correct one. But I think your little babe is just fine!

She also said that I should be giving him solids more often so he is not so dependent on breast milk. I thought before 1 it was just for them to get used to the texture and taste.

Do you ladies feel he's too small? Do you think it's bad he doesn't have any teeth? Should I cut our nursing sessions for more solids? He's meeting all his milestones but hasn't started crawling yet either. He is sitting up though. TIA?

opinions please .. Kai has basically outgrown his moses basket so I was looking to get a crib until he's 6months and can go in his own room, some work colleagues have told my partner if he's outgrown the moses basket he might aswell be in his own room and to just get one of those sensors to put under his cot, I feel like he's too little to be in his own room though 🤔 what has everyone else done?
