I think around 6m you can put in those lovey blanket things, but it should be smaller than their head. He'd fall asleep with one and then I'd take it out because I was worried he'd suffocate. As he got closer to one I'd let it stay in during naps, then bedtime.

Both of my daughters had a blankie with/on them from the time they were born and on lol
