diaper bags? what do hospitals supply & what should I bring? it’s been 6 years since I’ve done this LOL. and I’m 37 weeks I figure I should probably go out and get a bag and get it packed now so I’m ready!
Here’s what I ended up using / needing at the hospital:
- nipple cream
- a few diapers
- wipes
- diaper cream
- 2 sleepers - my baby went home in a sleeper, hat.
- baby blanket. It was winter so we covered him up
- my toiletries. Toothbrush etc.
- pads
- nursing bra
- car seat !! Lol
- baby mitts
- slippers
- change of clothes
Stuff I didn’t end up using
- makeup lol
Also, when you left the hospital and were discharged you could keep whatever was in your cart that they provide you with.
@mimixtmn that's so weird to me! I delivered at a hospital in Thunder Bay which is in Northern Ontario. They would provide one pair of mesh underwear and pads for the mom. For baby they had packages of diapers, formula (if that's how you chose to feed), wipes, samples of baby wash and diaper rash cream, outfits, hats, soothers, and swaddling blankets as they keep the baby swaddled all the time. They also had a breast pump you could use.
Def ask your hospital all the stuff @crharmer, said was not provided for me with any of my children. I gave birth at a big hospital in Toronto. They gave me a handful of diapers with my first two none with my third, a hospital gown for myself & baby. A single pad for myself (with my first they gave me a handful). A comb & small tube of petroleum jelly. They also provided the swaddling blankets as they swaddled the baby constantly.
Make sure to pack your own toiletries, spare undies, chap stick(trust me), whatever pads you prefer cause the hospital ones are
Gross, slippers and Jammie’s change of clothes, nursing bra. Both hospitals my kids were born at had diapers and wipes and baby wash but I preferred to use my own. So a couple sleepers, baby wash, those little baby Mits so babe can’t scratch their face. I ended up using socks I didn’t think my newborn would need them. Also snacks for you and hub maybe a magazine and bring a refillable water bottle!
@crharmer I was well prepared anyways and preferred having my own things anyways. It was fine.
@tlistboom Yikes, that's awful! I couldn't imagine being provided so little while staying.
It depends on the hospital actually .. you should call and ask .. mine supplied maybe 3 newborn diapers and 3 hospital pads for me for the bleeding.
I brought my own pjs, slippers, newborn diapers, baby hats, clothes for both of us, nursing bra .. etc.
There are lists online to check if you google hospital bag essentials.
They literally provide everything. I always prefer my sleepers and swaddling blankets to hospital grade. Also I breast fed and they don't like to give you pacifiers for baby until around 6 weeks because of "nipple confusion". So if you want to introduce one, bring your own.
Hospital initially provided swaddling blanket and cloth diapers but they take it back. I secretly snuck some home cuz I loved them LOL!
