I’m due in 4 weeks and I am stressing SO MUCH about delivery and hospital bills. I’m in San Antonio TX... Ladies please share your experiences! How much did you pay with insurance? How much did the hospital bill your insurance? We have BCBS of Arizona. I’ve been reading some crazy numbers on the internet, over 10k or 20k and I’m freaking out 😩😩😩

@amysbabies, we actually do have a maximum out of pocket (for the family, husband, step-son and I) and I believe it’s $5400, but I have been reading that the insurance won’t necessarily pay for the rest unless medically necessary, or that it depends on how they code it at the hospital. Also, if the doctor, anesthesiologist, etc are in network or not. But even if my OB is, there’s no guarantee she’ll be the one delivering since it might happen at a time she’s at her consult, or in the middle of the night, you never know. I want a natural vaginal birth but you also can’t really control that. I’m definitely going to call my insurance on Monday cause I just have so many questions. Are induced births (successful vaginal AND unsuccessful ones resulting in C-sections) considered elective procedures? I’m unfamiliar with the whole health system cause I’m not American (I’m Chilean, our system is considered expensive for Latin American standards but still way cheaper than here). The price of health in the US is just insane 😱

Not in Texas, but- I had an induced vaginal birth- mine was billed for $80,000, my daughter had a separate bill over $100,000- but we had a week stay in the hospital, there were some health issues involved. We have an HMO plan an paid $250 each so $500. I recommend if you plan on having another to shop different insurance plans, specifically looking at pregnancy/delivery. But for now look at different agencies and see if any place offers assistance, perhaps you might qualify for a state plan that covers the cost? I would try everything. You can also call your insurance company- do you have a maximum out of pocket cost? Some put it at $5,000 or so, how it works is you pay a % but once your % reaches that limit you are 100% covered. It’s prob too late to change your plan, but I would try everything- maybe they have a special pregnancy package you can add?

Call and ask your insurance line (listed on your insurance card) to be sent an Explanation of Benefits with co-pays. They can tell you specifically what you have to pay. Each plan is different with BCBS. It all depends on what your employer has elected for coverage! So what one person pays, yours will be different because your employers are different.

It depends on what plan you have with my first I had a copayment play and paid 300 a day max 5 days so I paid 1200. This one is a co payment as well but I’m confused I’ve been told 600 for my whole delivery (c section) but then I was also told 600 a day per day. Online it says 600 for delivery. But if you have a coinsurance that’s where your paying thousands. They messed up at first at gave me a coinsurance and it was going to be 20% of the stay which would of been 12,000. Do you know what kind of plan you have.? You can always call and they can tell you how much!
