How many think it’s ok to have your dog off leash and playing at a playground?

I think it’s asinine, but my friend thinks it’s acceptable. So it got me wondering WWMLsay?

(Note- in this case there is a leash law so either way it’s wrong)

@laniejay, I’d like that a thousand times if I could!

It’s totally unacceptable. Some children are very afraid of dogs. Others will try to chase and grab the dog and could scare the dog. I don’t care how well you think you know your dog. It’s an animal. And playgrounds are for children... not for moms to worry if that dog is going to bite their child

My sister had the sweetest dog who I never would have suspected biting. One day he turned and nipped their nephew and they were appalled. Thankfully he was an amazing dog and only warned him because he could have hurt him. Come to find out their nephew stuck his finger in the dogs anus! So maybe you trust your dog, but you shouldn’t trust other people kids!

My husbands uncle has a little boy and their boy was just minding his own business playing by himself running in circles in the yard and their friends have a dog who hasn’t ever bit anyone or showed signs of aggression and the dog ran and attacked Isaac for no given reason at all, their little boy had to be rushed to the hospital because his face was bleeding uncontrollably and he had to get stitches where the dog ripped skin apart, and then the owner shot the dog because he couldn’t trust it. My husband cousin had a pitbull who also never showed signs of aggression towards anyone and this dog loved his daughter, and would play with her, and everything until one day the dog just out of no where attacked the little girl and killed her, the dog grabbed a hold of her throat, and shook her around, and it ripped her throat apart, and by the time they got her to the hospital it was too late. So I don’t care how nice of a dog it is or if it hasn’t ever bit anyone, or if it isn’t aggressive there is always a chance that it could turn on you or your child or someone else’s child so it’s best to be safe and keep it on a leash to prevent anything from happening.

I’m a previous dog owner. Although he was hypoallergenic, and very good with people and kids. I still only brought him to an off leash dog park to freely run around and play. Its not very hygenic for kids to be rolling around in areas where dogs are peeing and pooping. Or take the chance of him hurting anyone or someone hurting him. So if we were in other public areas, he was always on a leash and never out of our sight.

I have a nephew and he practically grew up with my dog. He gets rashes when he gets in contact with other dogs but with mine, he was completey fine. So they would cuddle and play together. It was the most adorable thing!😍

In my area, dogs aren’t permitted to be on the playground. If it’s at a big park with walking trails, dogs can be there but there are signs all over that they can’t go on the playground. In my opinion, I don’t think there is any reason to bring a dog to a playground! There are dog parks, and other places that are more suitable for dogs.

I don’t even let my dog in my house let alone lick my son, he licked his foot one time and I freaked and said no, he wasn’t being rough when he licked his foot or anything he was curious about the new baby which is understandable I know my dog wouldn’t ever hurt my son but I also don’t give my dog the chance to hurt my son which is exactly what all dog owners need to think about when they’re in a public area you don’t even wanna give your dog the chance to harm someone or someone’s kids especially because kids cant defend themselves against a dog so I personally think all dogs even in their own yards should be on a leash (unless you live on land of your own and don’t have neighbors around you)

Yup it should always be on leash. There are off leash hours they can come back to. Smh.

I actually got into it with a lady last summer who had her dog (a pit and I am not biased I like pits) running free around and in the playground like your picture, I bred and trained dogs until last summer so I love dogs. I asked her to please get the dog on a leash and out of the playground as my kids are not comfortable around strange dogs neither am I for that matter. She proceeded to tell me how friendly her dog was so it was fine my kids didn’t need to be scared, I def gave her a piece of my mind I don’t know who she thought she was telling me what my kids need to be scared of and she left. It is so dangerous you can trust your dog all you want with your own children but not with others. I was bit on two occasions by my cousins dog as a child the dog was the friendliest thing and never bit anyone else but something about me made him uneasy and they actually put him down after because they felt the couldn’t trust he wouldn’t do it again. My dogs are fully trained even to stay in a spot and not leave if I tell them and I would not have them in a playground or leash free. Not even to mention the ladies dog also peed on one of the posts of the play structure where kids then dig up the wood chips and play.

Yea, he would have got an ear full. Despite the old wives tale... Dogs mouths are friggin filthy! I would simply say... leash your dog or else. I don't play that... An unleashed dog charged me at a park while I was pregnant and I could not run but luckily he was friendly and just wanted to sniff me. The owner immediately ran over and put a leash on him and bolted straight to the car. It was in that moment that he knew he had @#^$&#*$* up!

I think it depends. Turbo is never leashed. But Turbo is trained so stay a certain distance away from me and watch basically my every move waiting on cues that I may need help. I could never live a normal life If i had to constantly hold a leash. But maybe he fits in a different category.

This pisses me off. We’ve had dogs my whole life and I’m a huge animal lover but you have to be responsible with them. Dogs can snap for any reason, kids are sticky and pull ears etc. Dogs jump and lick. Total recipe for disaster putting the two together. Dogs should be kept on a leash in a public place unless in a designated area and out of a play area always. Anything else is just totally irresponsible in my opinion.

Dogs should be on leash at all times if they are outside the house !!!! (Unless your at a dog park) I fuckin hate it when I see people walking dogs with no leash on. IDGAF if your dog doesn’t bite ! BITCH HE MIGHT BITE ME OR MY CHILD. Then what ? Ima sue your stupid ass for sure. Especially at a play ground where kids are running around a dog will end up running around too and might hurt a child. Plus dogs wanna be licking everything around I do not want my baby sliding down a slide with dog spit all over it. NO THANKS.

Yeah, no. Dogs belong in their own playground or yard. My ds is highly allergic for one, and two, he is terrified of any dogs, big or small. I would not be happy if a random dog came running towards me and my children.

Absolutely NOT ok under any circumstances besides a guide dog

I think dogs should be on a leash at ALL times when outdoors. I have multiple experiences with dogs to form that opinion. I have been bitten by dogs not leashed. And my son has come close (He does not fear them at all).

Also, a few years back a dog literally ran under my car while I was driving down a residential street. He ran under my back tires, and even though I was going slow I still hit him. Of course I stopped and offered to help. I felt so horrible about it. But then the owner tried to get almost a thousand off me and was threatening me, when his dog was not on a leash. I had to actually go to the police and let them handle it.

Being a responsible pet owner is keeping your dog safe and leashed to ensure not only your dog's safety, but other people.

@fuhgeddaboudit, in this one instance it is illegal- however, there are other places where it is not so it got me wondering what other people think. If you don’t approach things with an open mind, you learn nothing.

If there's a leash law the dog should be on a leash. It would be different if you were in a large area where there aren't other dogs/people. Some people are scared of dogs and if a random dog bolted at my kids... honestly I'd probably be pissed. And I'm a dog owner.

Dogs should not be on children playground equipment. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Quickest way to the ER for both pet and children.

Totally agree with you. Any dog can attack for any reason. Plus they’re gross. I don’t even let my own dogs lick all over my kids faces, they’ve drank outta the toilet FFS.

Dogs belong at a dog park. Not a kids playground.

laniejay

Also notable: the dog bolted right at My youngest and was repeatedly licking his face. The owner didn’t call the dog, but laughed and said “he’s just saying hi” idgaf, I don’t even let my own dog lick my kids. Not only that, but I had no idea of its intentions when it began to bolt and ran to my kid. No way I would have gotten to him to stop it in time if he was to hurt him. Leash your dog and keep it away from my kids. Instead I had to pack my crying kids into the car and leave.
