Super pissed yall cuz ever since he was 2 months old I’ve asked the doctor how we can fix his flat head and up until the age of 8 months our answer was ‘tummy time’ which we did. But here he is almost 9 months and I took him to a different pediatrician and she tells me a helmet won’t fix his head and he will most likely he will need surgery. I’m upset, frustrated, scared, and sad. I don’t understand why nobody did anything for him when I asked a million times and now it’s too late

We have an appointment with an actual doctor that specializes in this in July so hopefully he will tell us he can wear a helmet!

@k_nc, yes she loves looking that way and laying on that side , I will def ask her pediatrician about it and see if she can get a referral so far they told us to do Tummy time and see if it helps

@countrymama121, that sounds like tortecollis too, do you notice that she favors looking to that side more? If so talk to your pedi and see if you can get a referral to a physical therapist and they can do stretches and exercises with her to help

@countrymama121, it’s good that it’s only on one side but my son has brachycephaly and that’s where the whole head it’s flat. Usually if it’s just one spot, it can be fixed easily with more tummy time and changing sleeping positions

@k_nc, okay thank you I will have to try that we keep trying to have her sleep on the other side of her head but she keeps wanting to lay on her flat spot

Don’t let your family get you down. They are obviously ignorant of the facts. Sounds like you’ve done everything you could and was just misled by a negligent doc. I hope you get the free eval from cranial technologies. They should be able to get you in rather quickly.

@buntaine, don't blame yourself and don't let anyone else make you feel it's your fault. I'm sorry your family is giving you such a difficult time!

I went to the Lombard office too and they told me it was likely due to how he was positioned inside of me. I also took my son to a pediatric chiropractor that focuses on head shapes for a second opinion. I figured she wouldn't push surgery unless it was a really bad case. She did an eval (no adjustments!) and also had the opinion my son's head was shaped the way it was due to positioning inside me. It was her second opinion that pushed me to look into Cranial Tech and be more comfortable with the doc band.

I always try to have him sleep on his sides, my son was like this also but then again I Co sleep so we sleep chest to chest cuddling so he doesn't move so much and then I rotate every so often during the night (he absolutely hated tummy time) but not sure how much your son moves in his sleep now that he's a little bigger and I see you don't Co sleep. Hope all gets better, also he's such a handsome little guy. 😚💕

Do any of you guys think that because of him having a flat head, it could have led to him having developmental delays? He struggles with his motor skills and everyone in the family is saying it’s my fault but I’m so torn. I don’t know how he could be delayed when I played with him and interacted with him like a parent should. I tried telling them that it could be linked to the flat head and they disagree. They are stuck on the whole ‘ you didn’t do enough tummy time’ even tho I did it everyday. It might not have been 10-20 minutes but I did it for as long as he could

@buntaine, that’s crap. My sons was like that because he stayed transverse in my uterus for a prolonged amount of time. Reality is that your ped dropped the ball. I would be finding a new one. Would be hard to trust anything they said after this kind of gross misjudgment.

@countrymama121, I wouldn’t worry too much, my son had a flat spot from having torticollis when he was born we just did stretches and put his head the other way to sleep and he’s been completely fine since about 4 months

We went to an Orthotist and they did a thorough exam to see if our son needed Physical Therapy and/or a helmet. He needed both due to congenital torticollis. I agree with the others - do not wait any longer! This is severe and time is of the essence.

Yeah definitely! Maddux’s head is very flat and it’s throughout his whole head. Everyone told me it’s because I didn’t do enough tummy time but a lot of research says it can be how it was developed in the womb which makes sense because is been flat ever since he’s been born plus he was premature. I just feel really bad especially if he needs surgery

Here’s a before and after of my son. Before was on the left. Obviously his defect wasn’t nearly as bad as your sons but you can see how the skull shape was improved.

@buntaine, that is concerning. They may think that too much time has elapsed and surgical intervention is needed. That will be a very in depth surgery and to be honest, scares the crap out of me. It wouldn’t hurt to just get the free consult from cranial technologies just to get their perspective.

@cams, he has an appointment with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon/doctor. Is that the same thing as the cranial doctors? I’m nervous they are just sending me to a surgeon

@buntaine, there are locations in Lombard, Skokie and Chicago. I’m not sure how close those are to you but I would make an appt and get a 3D scan and see what they suggest. 1st appt is free. The location I went to was 1.5 hours away but worth it.

@masseymomma16, yeah I thought so too! I read online they can have one up until 18 months and he’s only 9 months. It’s a lot flatter in person unfortunately. It’s completely flat in the back

I would be livid!!!! I am for you lol Let me talk to that other pediatrician! 😂 But seriously I think once you see a specialist you will feel better. They can do the helmet up to 18 months I thought? It just takes longer.

We had a doc band from Cranial Tech. They were a really great company to work with and the location closest to use was easy to get into for an eval.

The longer you wait, the longer he will have to wear it / less likely it will be successful. Did you look at the link I sent you for the doc band place called cranial technologies? You don’t need a referral. You need to be seen earlier than July.

My nieces head looked like this. They didn’t helmet her until 9 months. I would definitely get a referral for a DOC band. The people who specialize in it. A general Dr knows dick about it 🤷🏼‍♀️

My son has had a flat head since 2 months old. Everytime he goes to the doctor I ask about it and she always says ‘do tummy time, prop him up, sit him up more’. He is now 8 months old and since 4 months has been always propped up. Should i get a second opinion because to me, his head is pretty darn flat
