Question for the mama's with Cholestasis
How did you feel when it first started and how severe was your itching (and where did you itch the most)? How fast did you talk to your midwife/doctor about it?
Thank you, I will. Good luck to you too, I saw you're being induced tomorrow?! Wishing you a smooth and fast delivery. ?
My bile acids were 35. Soooo, I just got done at my midwife's office and they said they will induce me on Friday. ???? I'll be 37 weeks on Friday. Waiting at L&D now to get the first dose of the steroid shot for baby's lungs and have to come back for the second dose tomorrow. I'm excited but also very nervous. Was hoping for Sunday since my baby shower is planned for Saturday and my 11 year old daughter worked really hard on it with the help of a friend of mine. Guess we will have to make it a "meet the baby" party instead lol. I'm excited to meet my little guy soon. My midwife also said if anything changes in the meantime and if I feel less movement or anything, she said to come right in! Ah, I'm so nervous and excited !!!!
Ladies what was your bile acid results?
Especially ladies that delivered at 37wks
Itching has been on going for about 3 weeks for me and was diagnosed yesterday and to start meds today
I am 34+4 and unsure how much I should be advocating for this baby to be delivered at 37 weeks vs 39 when I am scheduled for a cscection...
I will have an appt with my ob next week And go for another nst next Monday as I had one done yesterday
Hope everything is ok unicorn? Do you have your bile acids back? Fingers crossed you can go home soon! Turtle, I'm glad to hear your cousin in law's babies are ok! I read the same thing about inducing at 37 weeks with cholestasis. That would make me feel better than 36 weeks. But I'll do whatever is best for my little guy. The dr on call prescribed me ursodiol, and so far and it's giving me even worse heartburn than I already had lol (And you can't take tums an hour before and two hours after taking the meds). ? I see my midwife at 1:30, I'll update when I'm done. ?
Thank you. Tanmac, how far along are you now? I think I would feel more comfortable if I could at least wait until 37 weeks (Friday). But I trust my midwife. This just caught me off guard and I'm trying real hard not to stress. Ah!
Mine started the same as your describing. My bile acids were elevated but not crazy high they put me on ursodiol to help lower my levels. I was told to come in if I noticed a decrease in fetal movements, they said I should be getting 6 in a 2 hour period. I'm having weekly nsts and ultrasounds along with my OB appointments. Seeing him this Friday so will find out if they will induce me sometime next week.
Hey mamas, my midwife's office just called me and said they got my bile acids back and they are elevated so I do have cholestasis ? My midwife is off today but the dr on call sent a script for some meds for me to take today and they gave me an appointment for tomorrow with my midwife to discuss what's next. Last week at my appointment she said that if my results are elevated she wants to induce. I'm sitting at work right now and I'm freaking out. After my liver enzymes looked good I really thought the bile acids would be good too. I'm due 4/14. I just want to make sure my little guy gets the best start possible and I feel like 36 weeks is still early. I'm so confused. ?
Glad you got labs done! In my experience, Bile Acids take the longest to come back - up to two days even with a rush. So frustrating since that's the lab that is most telling! I'm currently waiting on pins and needles for mine to come back to see if we will induce tomorrow. It looks like your liver is doing great though, so it's a good sign - my liver numbers are elevated with all of this. Fingers crossed the itching is just an allergic reaction but if it isn't, it's not the end of the world
Thanks mamas! ? I hope all of you get some relief from the annoying itching soon, but so good to hear that all of you are in great hands and doctors and midwives are watching you closely. @nelidaivonne thank you for checking up on me. I have an appointment with my midwife tomorrow and hopefully she will have all of my results (I had my blood drawn Monday evening). I was able to see my AST and ALT levels online and I think those were good (AST was 27 and ALT was 16). Now we are just waiting on the bile acid results to come back, I think that was the one thing they had to send out and I hope it'll be back by tomorrow morning. How long did it take for yours to come back if you don't mind me asking? I'm still itching, mostly at night (my lower legs and arms itch the most) and a little during the day. Once I start scratching though I can barely get myself to stop. Another thing that crossed my mind though... i was prescribed Keflex at my last appointment due to a UTI, and now I'm wondering if it could be the antibiotics that are making me itch? I don't think I ever had that happen from keflex before, but you never know?! I don't have a rash or anything though, but I'll definitely ask about it tomorrow. I do have some pain/numbness under my right breast, but I've had that throughout the whole pregnancy almost and had it during my other two pregnancies as well. I think that has to do with the growing belly more so than my gallbladder. Ugh, I just keep guessing and driving myself crazy with it lol. Hopefully I'll know more tomorrow. Thank you all so much for your replies and good wishes! ❤
Echoing everyone else, I itched all.over. Unbearably, and it was keeping me up at night. I also had several other symptoms that pointed to it (oddly enough never have had the upper right quadrant pain) and finally called in bc I was tearing up my skin. They got me in same day and sure enough, Cholestasis. That was 2 weeks ago. I'm 35 +2 now and on meds (300mg Ursodiol 3x/day. No side effects for me), baby is thriving at weekly check ups but my symptoms aren't getting better and we'll most likely induce within the next 2 weeks. Spent some time in L&D just yesterday to get steroids for baby's lungs just in case. I was freaked out and sad about that (induction/loss of my birth plan) at first but the peace of mind will be SO worth it. Plus, this itching has got to stop. I am going nuts!! Fingers crossed you don't have it!!
I just got diagnosed this week and I am 37+6. I had been a little itchy prior but just thought it was dry skin due to winter weather. Then is got unbearable and kept waking me up. They checked my baby girl with a biophysical ultrasound to make sure she was okay and doing well in hr environment. She passed with flying colors and we are just waiting to get the final blood test back to see if induction is necessary.
Thanks girls! I called my midwife office and left a message for the nurse, explaining what is going on just so they can let me know if it's ok to wait until Thursday or what they think. Thanks for sharing your experience and symptoms etc with me. I noticed today it's not as bad throughout the day, I'm only a little itchy on my wrists and ankles mostly. Let's see how it is tonight, I'm definitely keeping an eye on it. I also used lotion etc to make sure it wasn't dry skin. Good luck to both of you as well! ?
Exactly what PP said. It started at night for me as well. The second night I knew something was up and called my dr office and sure enough my levels were up. I'm on meds and will be induced next Monday at 36 w 3 d. Good luck mama, keep us posted!! Please make sure you mention this to your midwife. The itch isn't always on hands and feet. For me it was mostly my arms and legs.
It first started at night with me, like around 28 weeks my body was just itchy especially my wrists. The itching drove me insane. I took showers and put on lotion and nothing had helped. I didn't think it was anything bad so I thought nothing of it. At my next appointment I had explained it to my doctor and we ran tests that same day. She called me back a couple of days later and told me my bile acids were high and I have Cholestasis. They put me on antibiotics that same day and the itching wouldn't be so bad some nights, but then some nights the itching was so severe even taking medicine didn't help. They also prescribed me benadryl to help me at night so I could sleep. That also seems to help me too. ?
