Other group

Someone in another group I go into asked when people should stop nursing and she said she wouldn't go past 7 months. And she said u should never nurse in public without a cover and breastfed babies are cry babies.

I remember before I became a mom I just assumed all these cultural ideas had been researched, that some authorities had done their job and that these opinions were based on something. Then I became a mom of a baby girl who nursed nearly nonstop for the first 3 months, absolutely could not be put down, and will not be fooled into accepting less than the best (mama & her beloved babas). At 19 mo she cherishes her babas and I cherish our bf relationship. I know my DH's fam thinks I'm bizarre for it but they don't have the balls to attempt any kind of (intelligent or otherwise) dialogue about it. There's a quote about not adapting to a very sick society that comes to mind.

Keep doing what you're doing, milly! My oldest will be 3 in december and she just stopped nursing in January, just a month after her 2nd birthday. We now have b/g twins (just a little younger than yours, 9/16) and though it's difficult, I will nurse them as long as they want to. And the cover thing, forget that! My oldest hated being covered up, and I can't blame her one bit! People are totally clueless.

Feed your baby until they are ready to self ween and with a damn cover .. I don't get some women !! That's why I left my other group.. full of bad advice

It's really sad that parenting has become so unnatural that bottle feeding formula is the norm and what's expected. It's great those things exist for people that really need them or make the personal choice to use them but bf shouldn't be looked down upon. Every once in awhile I see someone I was close to high school or college make a comment about bf on FB and it makes me sad. Like how could I have been so close to someone who was so narrow minded. And how can they have 2 degrees and not have educated themselves on such big parenting issues

Ugh. So frustrating.

If a mama wants to wean early and pay for formula, that's her choice...not the most economical or nourishing, but for some moms maybe convenience or supply issues could make it a reasonable choice.

But to say that breastfed babies are crybabies and to make such negative comments about extended breastfeeding is so narrow-minded and ignorant.

I will probably stop pumping around 12 months because it sucks and makes my job way harder...but I foresee my daughter nursing in the mornings and evenings for a long time after that.

Comments like that sound very immature and uneducated. I remember parroting back things i had heard from my parents and community, thinking they were my own opinions. I remember my mom saying you shouldn't breastfeed once the kid can pull up your shirt and ask for it. And I remember not having a strong opinion about that one either way so kind of going along with it. Thankfully I didn't have kids until my 30s when I had a stronger sense of self. I would have been a completely different parent 10-15 years ago.

I just can't imagine choosing to pay for formula and dealing with bottles once you have a good bf relationship with your lo. It's just so easy once you're over the initial hump!

And if a mom isn't comfortable with her lo helping himself to the boob in public, she can always stop them. Ds nursed past 20 months and never once revealed my boobs in public. You can nurse a toddler and still set boundaries! The woman she knows likely wasn't bothered.

The cry baby thing is just stupid.

I just read the thread. There's a positive correlation between a woman's education and her likelihood of breastfeeding. I don't mean to be snotty, but based on her grammar it's amazing she's nursing at all :/

It's very offensive. You know before I had kids I probably said insensitive things- not quite like that but definitely not supportive. It's too bad because there is probably a woman reading that and will wean their kid sooner from bm because of those comments. I am really on board with the let's support each other movement instead of pointing out perceived flaws.

That's such a close minded and ridiculous viewpoint. It just shows a lack of maturity. Unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation spread about breastfeeding and it can be discouraging. Some people don't have the education or support system and they truly believe what they are saying.

I nursed my first until she was almost 3 and honestly didn't think anything of it. She's independent and smart (and stubborn and strong willed...) but not a cry baby. It's sad that people think that way.
