Hard time breastfeeding
I had my daughter November 23 and went to her first pediatrician appointment today. The doctor was very concerned because she has lost a pound since birth. I have not supplemented her at all since birth , only given her breastmilk. Her pediatrician wants her to be supplemented with formula. I am so disappointed though because I don't want her to get nipple confusion. I tried breastfeeding my first child and had to give up because I introduced formula too soon and he would no longer breastfeed. I will be very disappointed if I have to formula feed this baby. Any tips, insight?
My only recommendation is to use a nipple that reduces the chance of confusion. I've used TommeeTippee and Munchkin Latch to feed him breast milk since he was 5 days. They are supposed to mimic the shape of a nipple, reducing confusion. My guy had a latching issue and lost 15% of his body weight. He's now gained 1lb 6oz in 7 days. I also introduced a paci at 3 days old, and we haven't had any issues. Be persistent, mama, and listen to what you feel is right. I would try a bottle of breast milk before formula, but the choice is entirely yours.
I too had to supplement because my daughter lost a pound. I supplemented 1oz of formula after I nursed her for two weeks. At first I was heartbroken. But she gained it all back and I don't have to supplement anymore and we didn't have an issue with nipple confusion. Good luck and don't give up!
Jace lost a pound also. He's 6 days now, we went yesterday to his first appt and she said to supplement. His latch isn't perfect because of my flat nipples ? we tried a nipple shield and it just didn't work for us. So what I do now is pump all that I can which is only 1-1.5 oz from each and I give him that. She said he needs 1-2 oz. So if I come up short on my pump I'll supplement with an oz of formula. We go to check his weight today. I know he's getting what he needs because his wet/poo diapers have increased. Unfortunately, Jace isn't showing interest in my boob anymore
