Extremely sleepy baby

I had my baby girl on nov 23. I am exclusively breastfeeding her. She has never had a bottle, never had formula. My concern is that she is so sleepy. She will barely wake up for feeding and falls asleep soon after the feeding starts. I'm concerned she has lost a lot of weight. I cannot get in to see the pediatrician until Monday because of the thanksgiving. Any insights? Tips?

For those saying it's very normal for newborns...not always the case. High bilirubin levels can be the reason for a very fatigued baby. To rule it out, I would call your baby's pediatrician for bilirubin test. My baby was born with high levels and it makes them respond in a sleepy manner even for feedings. Just fyi.

My little one was the same way... But it is totally normal for them to sleep most of the time in the first few days. I ended up going to a lactation specialist at the hospital and they gave me pointers on how to wake her up and how to keep her interested. Same as the other mommies where saying, skin to skin worked best along with changing her right before it was time to nurse using cool wet wipes and switching breasts often. The sitting her in an upright position did nothing for her, she could sleep in the most awkward positions.
Also remember at that age, baby only needs a tiny amount at a time anyways as their tummies are so small.
Hope everything went well at your appointment!

Are her eyes yellow? Extremely sleepy babies can be an indicator of jaundice...

My son was jaundiced and extremely sleepy. I found that it helped to change him between each breast (I'm exclusively breastfeeding) because he doesn't like being cold. Took a good 4-5 days until his bilirubin level stabilized. Now he eats like a champ!

Make sure you are tracking when you feed, and how many wet/soiled diapers lo has as the doctor will ask this!

I had a problem with it too my doula suggested take all the clothes off to get skin to skin, if you have to wipe them with a damp wash cloth, switch breasts every 5 min or so the act of sitting them up should stir them. Good luck!

You can always go to labor and delivery and ask to weigh your baby!

Yes, but there is very little pee in them. It can't be more than a teaspoon of wet in her diaper. She sleeps constantly though. I have to really annoy her to wake her up and almost as soon as she starts breast feeding she falls asleep. She is asleep 23 hours out of the day...

Is she having wet diapers? 4-5 a day? That's a good indication that she's getting enough.
