Got pulled over

On our way home from a friend's house this evening. It was 11pm and I was driving my husband and three kids home. I asked why the cop pulled me over and he said because I had my high beams on - which I did but then turned them off when I got behind the car in front of me (which was the cop).

Where I live, not in the United States, the police do this crap all the time. My ex got pulled over, cop said because they were worried about him drinking and driving with his son in the vehicle. 1- you couldn't see his son, it was a truck with tinted windows and the son was in his child seat in the back. 2- my ex was working in construction, had just got off work so didn't exactly look like a law abiding citizen. 3- it was 4 in the afternoon in the middle of the week!

If the road's conditions (i.e. a road w/ hills and tons of curves) didn't allow her to see that there was a car in front of her, I honestly don't see why it was necessary for them to stop her, either. Especially if as soon as she rounded the curve & saw the car, her lights were dimmed.

Some people have a hard time understanding things until their placed in the same position.

Yeah, but that's what I'm saying. I wasn't behind anyone. There were no cars on the road. As I came up over the hill and saw his tail lights, I turned my beams off.

When he came up to my car, I had my drivers license and registration ready to hand to him and just said "Good Evening". He said "I pulled you over because you had your high beams on." I said "oh, I'm sorry, as soon as I came over the hill and saw your lights, I turned them off." He snatched my stuff out of my hand, shined his light in my car and then walked back to his cruiser. A few minutes later he came back, handed me my stuff and said "continue to be courteous to other drivers".

I said "Thank you, have a great night," and he walked away.

To me, him saying "continue to be courteous" was his way of saying that I didn't do anything wrong and it was just a random stop as it was late and there weren't any other cars on the road at the time.

Driving with high beams is illegal if you are approaching a vehicle is typically within 500 feet. If you are following a vehicle it is typically within 200 feet.

It's a safety violation, no matter how dark the road is.

His attitude wasn't necessary but he's doing his job.

It makes sense why they use excuses like this to pull people over, but being rude was unnecessary. Hopefully he was just having an off night and your attitude may have turned it around after he left. ?

@big - I'm not complaining. I said he was just doing his job. I didn't call the cop any names in this post. I never said anything negative about him. I wished him a good night with a smile on my face.

I was simply stating that I didn't break the law and I got pulled over. Whatever, no big deal.

So if you had been drunk and killed 5 ppl in a car crash ppl would have said where were the cops ? They can't win.

@heather - that's what this seemed like.

Honestly, I don't even care that I got pulled over. He was rude but I was polite. It was 5 minutes out of my night and I totally get he was doing his job. I hope this post didn't come off like I was complaining, it was just my first time being pulled over for not actually breaking the law. I turned them off as soon as I saw the car and I wasn't in a residential area. I was on a back windy road with lots of deer.

He could of thought you were signaling him for help as well.

You didn't get pulled over for no reason.

He pulled you over in case what you did was for a reason.

When I was a new driver I accidentally had my high beams on and didn't realize it till I was right behind a car which happened to be a police car. I thought to myself "wow my lights sure are bright". And then a light bulb clicked in my head that my brights were on. And then while trying to turn them off, I flashed my lights too. ?

What a mess I was.

LOL and he didn't pull me over! I think he or she was probably pre occupied by something else. Phew.

Police pull over motorists for minor traffic offences because criminals don't just commit serious crimes.

They use the road networks and are more likely to commit traffic offences than you or me. They don't think any rules apply to them.

Unfortunately it's not until the car is stopped and the occupants are spoken to that they know who they're dealing with.

Either way, doing their job. I'm sure you'd be happy if your car had been stolen and he stopped it.

That's just police doing their jobs. A huge amount of people who are caught with things like outstanding warrants are actually just randomly pulled up for licence checks or random breath tests etc and are opportunistically caught out.

I am personally grateful that police proactively check with bulk amount of people on our roads because it makes the them that little bit safer for me and my loved ones.

Actually it is illegal if there are other cars or you are in a residential district. But at least he just let you go.

When I was in highschool, one time both my parents got pulled over in the same night on the same road. It was a country road so not much traffic. He would sit pulled off the road until people were close to him then pull out and pull them over saying they hadn't dimmed their lights quick enough. Pretty sketch to me. I was with my dad when he did it to him. He literally pulled out right in front of us. My dad dimmed his lights as soon as the guy did but he said he was too close when he did it. It was a Friday night. I personally think he was just trying to find drunk drivers.

I got a speeding ticket a few weeks ago and my son who just turned 4 said "does this mean you're the bad guy???"

Yes he did. As soon as I got in front, he pulled behind me and turned his lights on. My 5yo daughter got upset and asked me if we were going to jail. ?

I was honestly really confused because I didn't know what I did, until he told me it was because my high beams had been on. I said I was sorry and turned them off as I came over the hill. He just took my license and registration and walked away.

I think once he saw my giant 8-month pregnant belly and my three kids in the back, he realized he made a mistake and just went through the motions until he let me go.

Did he pull to the side and have you pass to pull you over? That's weird but I wouldn't take it personal.

I've never drank and drove. I've only ever gotten one speeding ticket. He was a little rude, but I was very polite and and wished him a good night.

And I turned them off as soon as I approached the car. It was a hilly road so as I came over the hill and saw the car, I turned them off. He really had no grounds to even pull me over. I did everything correctly.

It's a sign in some cars that they have been jimmied. Officers here stop them thinking they may be stolen or that the regular beam is out.

It's illegal in CA. 24409(b) VC. Approaching from the rear (300') with high beams on.

Am I wrong to be upset? Last night I was running a fever, weak, tired, sore, my left boob feels like it got used as a punching bag. I asked my husband to call out of work today to help me with the kid so I could get some rest. He went to work. I texted him this morning. Part of me thinks I mean. The other part of me thinks I was fine for saying that because he should've stayed home with us.
