Advice - Guns! ?

We just moved to "the country" and we love it. However, our kids grew up in the city and have some settling in to do. I grew up with guns as my dad and brothers are all hunters, but my husband and I have never owned guns. I'm not opposed to gun ownership at all and we'll probably get one eventually once my husband and I have gone through proper training and classes. My brothers live out here and they and their kids are big hunters. My DS (9) really wants to learn how to hunt so my husband said they can all go and learn. DS knows he is not allowed to touch a gun until he is properly trained AND me or my husband are there. This is non-negotiable.

I would be calling the parents. I'm hoping they were not aware of them playing with guns. If they are then that is just bad parenting. Even so they should be locked away in a gun cabinet or something that is completely inaccessible by a child. My child would never be aloud over there again. It's things like this that has kids killing accidentally. When a child becomes immune to the whole fear of what a gun can actually do it can end very badly.

I know. My dad taught us how to properly handle and shoot a gun. He was responsible and always kept his guns in a safe. My brothers are the same way. I never have issues with him going over there because I never question how responsible they are with their guns.

People out here seem so lackadaisical. A note was sent home a few weeks ago because a kid in another elementary school accidentally brought a gun to school. His uncle put it in the kids backpack instead of his own (I guess they looked similar). When he realized the next morning his gun was missing, he called the school and notified them. They found it in the bottom of the kids backpack. He didn't even know it was there. He was in 1st grade!!!

This is the crap that bothers me!

It's a good thing you didn't op. You never know I'm not against guns I'm all for them. But that just sounds like a story waiting to hit the news. Kids playing with guns child gets critically injured. No no no ??????don't mean to put that picture in your head. But irresponsible parents that led there kids get a hold of firearms do happen, and bad things follow right after. Not saying you op, because your child could've lied and said he was going to play games or something. But the other child's parents.

No, he's never been there. I have never met the kid or the parents. We just moved here and he is finally making friends in his class. This being one of the new friends from school. Today before he got home from school, his friend called the house and asked if he could come over. When I went to get my son off the bus stop, I told him Donovan called and wanted him to call him when he got home. That's when he told me what the elaborate plan was.

I'm really hoping your son misunderstood and that they aren't real guns. I cannot imagine any gun owner letting their 9 year old play with a gun even if it is unloaded. That is beyond stupid. I mean a BB gun? Yeah my 8 year old has one and can use it at will but not a real gun. I would call the other parents and see what they have to say. If it is a real gun, my son would never be allowed over there. If it is a misunderstanding then allow your son to go. If the kids were doing it without the other parents knowing, then they will probably thank you.

As far as your son not telling you the truth in the future... Make a big deal out of him telling you the truth now. Tell him how mature it was of him to be honest and how that makes you trust him even more. Lay it on thick how proud you are and how much you appreciate the truth. You could even take him out for ice cream or something to show how much you appreciate it and then as you are eating, talk about why playing with guns is not ok. He is old enough to be able to think about what ifs. What if it were loaded? What if in the future he thought it was unloaded but it wasn't....

I was going to call the parents tomorrow and I'll also meet the little boy tomorrow because I'm chaperoning their field trip.

And yes, it could be a misunderstanding. They could have planned on using toy guns or maybe even real guns but the parents may have no idea. Honestly, something struck a chord with me though. Mothers intuition maybe? I just got a bad feeling about it all.

He has a BB gun and a pellet gun and knows how to use them but we only let him play with them when we are supervising.

I don't have any issues with real guns either but only when we all know how to use them. My dad taught me when I was younger but it's been so long, I need a refresher.

I think once you guys actually do a gun safety kind of thing, it will help him see how dangerous it actually is. My dad taught me all about gun safety at that age (maybe even younger ?) and I had my own gun, but he kept it with his guns (in his safe, even after each gun was individually locked and only he knew where the keys to each gun AND the safe were, and the safe even had a code to it too) and always stressed the obvious "don't point at people, even just playing or even if it's not loaded" "guns are ONLY for hunting and ONLY when he was with me". Also my SO is in the military and constantly reminds me how gun safety works. Understanding and actually experiencing shooting a gun helps a lot, it's the same as anything else, once your son can recognize there are certain rules to follow when it comes to any weapon, he can understand your concern a lot better; like you said, just some adjusting, that's all. (Sorry this is so long)
