Child support question
Do you know if you have to pay more child support if you rent or own a home? I'm asking for my brother, it's on the questionnaire he is filling out. He is renting currently but closes on a house in 10 days.

pretty sure it goes based on ur income..

That's why I don't understand why it asks the question. It asks if you own a home, what is the mortgage balance. Why would this matter?

Yup ^

they want to see where your income goes when it comes in to figure out what the support payment will be

It matters because assets are part of the equation. Income and expenses will change the amount due

Ok, I was reading that a home is considered an asset while the mortgage is considered a liability. They take the asset into consideration but I didn't read anywhere that they take the liability. Just wondering. Thanks for the input!

Another question, if anyone knows. The ex originally filed in the county she lived. She has since moved to a different state, but the letter my brother just got is from the original county/state. Shouldn't she have refiled from her new state?

It would make sense that they transfer the case to the state she lives in now, but don't take my word for it.

She can but if she does he could pay more since it would be based on the guidelines there. Plus the processing fees for out of state collection some places do.

Thanks ladies! I appreciate it!

He already pays nearly $700 a month now plus 70% of all medical expenses. He doesn't mind, he's her dad and has no issues supporting his daughter but he can't afford anymore money. He and his wife are expecting their first baby due in march as well.
