We had private insurance before the ACA. We paid $2200 a month. I'm not sure what premiums look like now.

Oh gosh... When my husband switched jobs, multiple insurance companies sent us offers for monthly costs, which we didn't need because his new job covered everything. The prices were insane. With PPO the monthly health insurance cost was $700, just for him and our son! That didn't include dental, or eye vision. However with his job now, health, vision, and dental are only $150 a month.

We have private insurance but it really depends on your state. Since Insurance isn't sold across state lines the premium, co-pays, deductibles, etc vary even within the largest companies. For example our insurance premiums and deductibles were WAY higher in South Carolina than in Minnesota. Minnesota is a healthier state over all and has more competition for insurance companies which significantly lowers the cost.

I just called anthem and they quoted me $1180 with either a $180 or $280 credit per month based on income.
This is the "gold" plan which is the best plan they offer. $750 individual/$1,500 family deductible. Then 80/20 coverage after that until we hit our maximum out of pocket which is $3,500 for individual and $7K for family.
Holy hell.

That's actually cheaper than my DH's plan thru an employer. He plays 1076 for our family (no vision or dental) with a 3k/6k deductible then 80/20.
I might need to look into anthem or the ACA when his open enrollment comes around since his employer is garbage.

That's less then we were paying for our group policy with way less coverage (United) at my husbands old job. My husband got a new job specially for the insurance we have now which is $650 a month.

I was expecting the $1K premium, I just wasn't expecting the deductible / out of pocket to be that high along with that $1K premium.
Right now, my kids and I are covered through my employer and my husband through his. I pay $330 per month in premiums for medical, vision and dental and he pays $70 for himself. He has a $1500 deductible, then 100% coverage. I have a 250/500 deductible and then a $1500/$3K out pocket.
So this will essentially be double that. It could be worse!

Your timing is good though! Open enrollment is in November. I'm anxious to change my coverage. My kids are on Cigna, which is reasonably priced, but dh and I have healthnet and I don't like it. His monthly alone is more than all 3 kids combined!!

I have private insurance thru one of the local companies here in minnesota, preferred one. It's one of their higher mid-level plans but I think it's awesome. I pay $165 a month for now on an individual plan with a 2k deductible (which I easily met from being sick in the beginning of this pregnancy so now virtually everything is covered 100%). I fully expect my premium to double once I add little one to it but I still need to get a quote on how that will change things.

Be careful with anthem bcbs, they are super shady and most of their deductibles don't go towards the out of pocket max. That sounds like the plan I had through them and they didn't specify that or I never would have gone with them.

Going online and getting quotes is really the only way to find out what you will pay. We don't qualify for any tax credit apparently so we pay 700 a month for the top level kaiser plan, no deductible, 80/20 6250/12500 out of pocket max individual and family.

Thanks ladies!! It's just crazy how expensive it is. Just crazy!!

I was told you don't qualify to get a plan thru the marketplace if your job offers you what Obama says is "affordable" insurance. Is that not true?
deleted-user·
@ Holly I'm in Minnesota with preferred one too! We must have the same plan because my deductible is 2000 as well! And pp I believe it is correct that if your job offers insurance even if it is unaffordable you do not qualify. Also our insurance dropped out of the marketplace because of all the issues it was having so we cannot get a credit even though my husband isn't offered insurance.
