Crating an old dog

My dog is 15 and she has been going to the bathroom in the house at night so we need to start crating her because I can't afford to keep replacing my floors. Tonight is night one and she won't be quiet!!! She just keeps barking and whining! She is going to wake up my kids. What can I do ladies?? I put her in the crate next to our other dog but I'm contemplating bringing her in our room. Do you think it will help? DH has allergies so our room is a no dog zone but I can't have her waking up the whole house.

Sounds like she not use to it, and that puking can be a sign of stress. Section off with the puppy pads, and at petco there is a pet urine control it's by richards. Suppose to help Olde r dogs

We released her from her prison. LOL!

I'll try sectioning off part of the kitchen tomorrow and putting the puppy pads down. Hopefully that will work! Thank you ladies! :-)

An old dog that hasn't ever, or rarely has, been in a crate can feel trapped, scared, lonely, and can often get sick or go to the bathroom, due to stress.

I think at her age, crating is not a good idea. It can cause her unnecessary stress and kill her.

I would do as pp's have said, lay down a bunch of papers, her bed away from them, and then see how that goes. Maybe put a bone, toy, or something she likes to keep her distracted. The freedom to choose what she wants to do should keep her more calm. Also, if your kitchen floors are tile, they should be easier to clean if she happens to not go on papers for whatever reason. Try not to be too hard on her, her old age may be hitting her pretty hard. Good luck, OP!

You can also try diapering her, for pee accidents. I know it wont save the poo ones but may help a little.

She's been to the vet, it's just because of her age and she had been doing it for a while. We replaced the floors in the family room and we thought that took care of it until we Noticed a few months later, she was doing it now in the living room. :-( I know it's just her age and I feel bad for her. It's not like she is doing it out of spite... She's just an old senile woman. She can't help herself. :-(

My moms car did this when he got old. He was an inside/outside cat and never used the bathroom in the house. She's just old is why probably. Sadly my moms cat passed away shortly after (not saying that's what is happening to your dog!). But I just think it's because he's old. Or maybe he's sick. Have you taken him to the vet? Did you just bring a new baby home?

I just went to check on her and she already puked all over the crate! Ughhhhhhhhh

Sometimes you have to let them whine for the first couple of nights before they stop. It's hard to do with sleeping kids!

We're going to try to bring her in our room but if that doesn't work, I'll definitely go get some puppy pads and try to confine her to the kitchen.

Yes I also agree with confining her to a room. Put baby gates up in the kitchen or something and let her roam around there. If she hasn't used a crate before she might think she's being punished.

She normally sleeps in the living room on her bed, which I put in the crate. I can try the kitchen with the pads but I have a feeling she will just try to escape... But it will be better than this hopefully!

Is the cage covered? I always cover my dogs cage. He's still a puppy though & we've crated him from the beginning so I'm sure it was a lot easier for us.

I agree with maybe confining her to one room, if possible, so she doesn't feel trapped/scared.

:-( It's just so stressful! DH wants to put her down but I refuse so I said I'd try crating her. We just spent $3K on new floors because she ruined the old floors. Now she moved onto peeing in the other carpeted room! I just can't let her destroy my house, I have kids and it's unsanitary.

Where does she usually sleep? Could you confine her to maybe the kitchen with potty pads instead of trying to crate train at her age?

That's tough, I'm not sure you can crate train a dog at that age. I mean they are used to being out so I'm sure she's confused as to why she's suddenly locked up. I'm sorry I have no advice, good luck and I hope you find a solution.

I can't take it anymore! Haley (yes my 1mth old and no I wasn't able to go through this "joy" of nursing my older daughter, Molly) has been screaming non stop for 6hrs! All she wants to do is eat and I can't have her attached to me all day, everyday! She has wanted to eat every hr on the hr for the past 3hrs! I put her in her room so I don't scream at her but I just can't take it!

Will your Mom be in the delivery room?

Will your Mom be in the delivery room? My mom made it sound like she was gonna be in the delivery room when I give birth, and quite frankly, I would just like it to be me and my fiancé. It's our first, and I want to share that special moment with just him. I don't want to hurt her feelings, and I know this is something she would really like to be a part of. So I feel bad telling her no.

is it wrong to be frustrated that my daughter acts like she can't do certain things with out my help. she plays dumb a lot and I wish I could be like no girl show what you know. she acts like she can't trace or match shapes so shes ask for "mommy finger" to help her so I barely hold her hand and she magically can do it but if I dont hold her hand she just scribbles and acts like she doesnt know the pic is how she traces when I'm "helping her" otherwise it'll just be scribbles all over the page
