Serious math question.

If you add 10% to a number to get a higher number, but then subtract 10% from the higher number, why isn't it equaling the original number?

You could've done a nested if statement and just include all of your parameters in one equation instead of doing a bunch but at least it worked!

I didn't get an error but I did have to do multiple formulas in multiple fields to count everything on the spreadsheet! And yikes. It is a lot of money!

Say a prayer we win this baby! It's looking to be about a $45 million contract and I get 2% commission!!!

I didn't even get halfway through the question before I quit! This hurts my brain. I suck at math. Lol.

Ok but you might want to add another argument at the end that tells it what to do if it isn't a program manager otherwise you will get an error message In Those cells

Awesome!! Got it! Thanks for being so helpful!

It was:

=SUMIF(A4:A451,"program manager",C4:C451)

Wahoo!

It'll be

=sumif(cell in column A="text",cell in column C,what you want to happen if they don't equal)

Remember to put quotes around the text

I never knew that! I've been googling this for an hour.

It might need to be a =SUMIF statement, as apposed to an IF/THEN.

If in excel though just go to the toolbar/formula bar and it'll take you step by step to build your function and you can drag it down the column

=ifthen(cell in column A=cell you're comparing it to,+cell in column c, here is where you put what you want to happen I the cells don't equal)

If the contents in column A are equal to a certain text, then add the values in column C.

Anyone know how to do that?

Alright, now! Who can help me with an IF, THEN excel formula???? :-)

I just don't like it. It's like I am saying, I am adding 10% to justify this expense and then giving you a 10% discount. Sooo I just have a feeling they are going to question it, which is just going to make this whole thing more of a pain in the ass.

If you're adding a straight 10% as in .1 then it should equal back but taking 10% of the numbers in question won't equate

Nope, it makes total sense! Haha! I really shouldn't drink while trying to price out multi-million dollar proposals!

So you're adding 10% of 100 so 10=110 but if you take 10% of 110 it's 11. It changes bc the number increases, does that make sense?

Because it's 10% of a different number than you originally started with. Ex. 5+10% of 5=5.5 but 10% of 5.5= .55 so it's more than the original .5 and wouldn't equal back to the initial number

Because 10% of a higher number is greater than 10% of a lower number. Unless you are subtracting the same 10% of the original number.. sorry if that's confusing.
