Sorry I know it's not the greatest picture, but does this look like a cold sore? It wasn't there when he woke up 2 hours ago, and I'm having a hard time figuring out what it is. HELP!!

@3 that's EXACTLY what I thought. That's so strange that it just popped up but it looks like mine do after I've had Abreva on it for a few days. It's good that it's not bothering him though cause I know mine hurt like a batch sometimes. Mine also have just come about without being sick or anything but there's usually that itchy tight feeling just before the swelling so I know it's coming.

Pp, exactly my thought. It looks nothing like this now. I think he must have hit his lip, but others mentioned impetigo so I'm gonna call the dr today.

When I called the dr and said something about a cold sore she said they won't prescribe anything for him because of his age.

It looks like a 3 to 4 day old cold sore, not one that popped out an hour ago, so that makes me think he's hit his lip or cut it. In my experience (and I've had A LOT) cold sores are water blisters right when they pop out, not open sores.

I would literally get a cold sore in the span of an hour. No joke. It looks like a cold sore. I don't know if cold sore remedies are safe for little ones. Maybe talk to your doctor? They can be very painful, so I'd hate for bub to have to wait it out.

@pp it's the herpes simplex type 1 virus, they're pretty contagious and spread easily through contact. I've gotten them my whole life and most likely because almost every adult in my life gets them. A lot of people can be carriers as well, spreading the virus without actually getting them. Last time I looked it up the article I read said something like 75% of the worlds adult population carries the virus, I'm not sure if that's 100% true but they're pretty common from my experience.

ETA- I looked it up again out of curiosity and Johns Hopkins says 50-80% of the adult population have oral herpes and 90% are exposed by the age of 50 ?

How do you get cold sores? Are you born with them? I know a lot of people who get them and always see products for them but am still clueless.

@ Nancy, when I get them no. There is still some left of whatever is on his lip but not nearly like this. Usually when I get them it takes about 2 weeks to go away.

I'm cold sore illiterate, but do they come and go that quickly?

I'll have to get him into the drs in the morning. We literally just lost our health insurance on Friday too, go figure. The one on his lip is just about gone too.

I second impetigo.

What about the one under his nose? I'm going to say impetigo.

@erin. A fever blister is a cold sore actually. Just another term for it. And you don't have to be sick to get them. I find sometimes to much sun exposure can cause them as well.

I suffer from them too but I haven't had an outbreak since before he was born. I'm on medication for it all the time to prevent them. No fever at all, he doesn't act like it's bothering him in the least bit, and now it looks like it's going away.

Has he had a fever? Could be a fever blister

Cold sores tend to appear within minutes sometimes. Poor guy. They can be quite painful. I suffer from them.

How would it appear so fast? Within an hour?
