Calling photographers?!
I'm looking into purchasing a camera. The one I'm looking at right now is a Canon Rebel XT. Is it a good camera? Anything I need to know about it?

Ok so this will be a good purchase? Now can you buy and canon lens to go with it? Or do they make specific lens for each model of camera they have?

I'm a Nikon person, but most lenses will work with whichever DSLR body you choose within that brand.

I have a Nikon D5200 and I love it. I don't know much about the canons but they do take good pictures.

The lens is what gives you the good photos, and knowing how to use the camera in manual mode.

So I found out the rebel XT is from 2005. It's only an 8mp. Will that make for crappy photos?

I wouldn't buy a camera that old. You may have issues with lens compatibility. I have a Nikon and bought a 50 mm portrait lens. I also learned how to use all the settings on the camera and can now take great photos.

How old would you consider too old to buy? I really would like a nice camera but don't want to spend 500-600 dollars on one

Mine was 1200 after a case extra lense and taxes. I think I got it two years ago.
I wouldn't buy anything older than 5 years.

Thanks everyone for the help! I'm going to keep an eye out to see if I can find a decent one at a decent price

Check pawnshops and offer up.

I would try a camera store and get a used one if you are on a budget. You just have to research. I wouldn't get anything older than a few years old. Make sure that you understand which lenses are compatible and their cost if you are planning on really using the camera.
